Crafty people, I have a craft "emergency"

Last night, my lovely husband knocked a ceramic decorative plate off of the wall and broke it.  The plate was my grandmother's and I loved it.  I am hoping to glue just the center part (the picture part) together.  What type of glue would you recommend?  Elmers doesn't work and I am scared to try super glue because I think it's too strong and would have a reaction to the ceramic.   What about gorilla glue, any experience?  My goal is to save the picture part, which seems to be most intact, and then move it to a shadow box, where it will be a bit safer, so it doesn't have to be a great glue job, just one that holds.

Of course, since y'all are more creative than I , if you have any suggestion that is more "Pintresty"  I will gladly take it.

Thanks a bunch.

I agree with PP.  The craft store should have glue to do just the job.  I am sorry your plate broke, I hope you can get it fixed.

ETA @elf828 that picture of your little girl is Adorable!
  • Don't use gorilla glue. It expands as it dries, causing all your cracks to look awful.

I use Tacky Glue for ceramics. Usually comes in a brown bottle. It dries clear, and it will scrape off if it dries on the picture part. You can also use a damp paper towel to get the extra glue off as you hold the pieces together. However, since tacky glue is water soluble, you cant immerse the item in water ever again. Since you want to put it in a shadow box it would be fine.

Other glues in the craft area might fit your needs as well.

  • There is a glue called MagnaTack or something similar, and they have one specifically for ceramics. They'll have it at Michaels or Hobby Lobby or whatever.
  • I would try E6000 or the elmers ceramic glue. Gorilla glue expands when it dries and you need to clamp the pieces together while it dries. There should be a few other glues that specifially say for ceramics at any craft store! good luck

  • I made some mason jar wine glasses a while back and used a glue called E-6000 they sell it at JoAnn's or Michaels. It's about $3-4 a tube, and there should be plenty to fix the plate. Hope that helps!
I've heard really awesome things about this brand of glue, especially for things like this - but have your DH fix the plate - or wait until you're not PG. I think the fumes are pretty intense.

  • There's ceramic glue but, honestly in all my years of playing with ceramics I have never found anything better than everyday super glue.
