Postpartum exercise?

I know most doctors tell you to wait 6-8 weeks in order to work out and take it slow. However, my doctor told me that he wants me to walk to help my c-section scar heal. Well... There's currently 6 inches of snow on the ground and it's currently 30 degrees out, so not walking outside. It's still snowing, so we are pretty much trapped in here. DH and I purchased a treadmill before DS was born. If I'm walking ridiculously slow (think 2.5 mph), think it is okay? I have a call in to my OB and am awaiting a response. Just curious what you guys would do. I am feeling okay (the difference a week makes!) and really itching to get back on my treadmill.

  • I asked my OB this same thing cause I want to get back to running at six weeks. She said walking on treadmill is fine.

  • I think it's fine. They wanted you to walk around in the hospital, right? Just listen to your body. My doc said if my incision started to throb that meant I had done too much and should rest. Otherwise she said walking was a-ok at my 2 week appt.

  • I started doing level 1 of 30 day shred last week when I was 3 weeks pp from my csection. I needed to do something and we have snow and below 0 temps so waking outside isn't an option for me either. I alter a few of the lower ab activities, but haven't had any other issues,..aside from being so out of shape. It feels good to sweat and have my muscles be sore!

  • I started Insanity (modified) at 6wpp. Basically I am so incredibly out of shape I feel like I need to workout so that I can do a workout.

I wish you could've seen my face when I read this. When I was doing 30DS to prep for my wedding, I felt like I was dying doing it. I can't even fathom doing it 3 weeks pp. You are braver than me. My goal is just to be able to do C25K at some point.

  • Treadmill walking sounds like a great idea!  Definitely walking is the best post c/s exercise.  I've been walking on the track at the gym, but today the weather was so bad the gym closed.  So, I did, um, nothing.
  • I have been doing some ab exercises to reign them in for a few weeks. Also, I boug a prenatal yoga DVD while I was pregnant with the intention of doing it. That never happened. It is still in the packaging. Maybe I will break it out and get my yoga on now. Maybe.

  • My dr said that if I wanted to walk lightly on a treadmill or elliptical I could. That was at my 2 week pp appt after my c section
  • Unrelated note, what did you end up naming your son?

  • @ChuggingWater - His name is Colin David. About an hour before going into my c-section, I was crying and told DH I didn't want to go in without a name. The names we went in with were Ethan, Evan, Colin and Benjamin. Immediately, Ethan and Evan were eliminated and DH goes, "is there one name that just seems right to you?" I said "Colin." And DH goes, "You're right. That's his name." Realistically though, who's going to tell a woman who's been in labor for 16 hours and about to have her abdomen cut open, "No." Haha.
