New Orleans Babies

Anyone toured the new Ochsner Women's Pavillion?

Just started trying to conceve but want to pick a OBGYN for a preconception visit (and from thereon) based on admitting privileges. I'm trying to pick between Touro and Ochsner.. I know Touro is 'where babies come from' in NOLA, but I also heard the new Women's Pavillion and Birthing Centers at Ochsner are amazing... Anyone visited yet? I was meant to go on a tour last week but it was cancelled because of the 'sneaux'!

  • I recently found out I was pregnant and was considering touring the new facility.  If you do tour soon would you please post an update of your thoughts/opinions...please and thanks!!!

  • I delivered at Touro both times, and while I hear Ochsner's new birthing center is fabulous, I personally feel that a good doctor (i.e., one who knows their stuff and who you feel comfortable with, since you'll be seeing and depending on them for 9 months) is worth more than the aesthetics of where you'll be delivering, which is such a short portion of the whole experience.  Also, for me, I live uptown, so it was nice to be just a few minutes away.  While I'm sure Ochsner has more bells and whistles, being brand new, it still wouldn't sway me, for those reasons.

  • It is amazing, and it has both OB and Midwife options. The rooms are nice, and the birthing center is just gorgeous. If you were interested in a med-free birth, you'd have the comfort of a tub and homelike environment with the security of a hospital 2 floors away. It made me feel almost bummed that I'm done having kids. Almost. ;)

I do agree with nawlinsgrl that the care provider is more important than the hospital, fwiw.

    Good luck!

  • Update: I'm now 6 weeks pregnant and I viewed the facility - it's really beautiful, and the options at the Perkin Alternative Birthing Center are exactly what I was looking for (even if I didn't know it until now!). Of course if the doctors were wholly underqualified I wouldn't still go for it, but everyone I met was amazing and my fist appointment with Dr Herrington went great. My husband is a med student so we wanted someone who wouldn't mind answering all his technical questions, as well as my dumb first time mom ones...
I know New Orleanians don't like to buck tradition, but if anyone else is thinking about it, I would really encourage you to check out the new Women's Pavilion and Ochsner docs. Healthy, happy babies can come from more than one place :)
