Sensual maternity photography...

Can someone explain this to me?  I'm all about documenting the bump, but I don't understand making it naked and sexual.  Who are these photos FOR?  If any of these were a picture of my parents when pregnant with me... I would gag.  I just don't get!

  • Out of the ones you showed, some are more tasteful than others, in my opinion. But that's MY opinion. What people consider artistic, beautiful, and sexy is so personal. I don't judge them for those choices.
Very true!  I can agree with that.  I've just been seeing so many on Pinterest and stuff that I thought... hmm... I wouldn't want to see my parents like that. ;)  But I see your point, maybe they are intended to be private!

  • I was a photographer for a long time before making a career change recently, and while I haven't done any maternity sessions quite so... naked as these, maybe I can put it in a different perspective.

These photos might not be for anyone else except the people requesting the photos. It could be that the woman feels at her absolute highest in femininity, beauty, sensuality, and power when she is pregnant. Maybe her husband feels the same. And maybe they want to commemorate those feelings they are having about themselves and each other. These photos could have been taken for *them* never to be seen by anyone else, including the child within.

How these images ended up on the web... well, most of us photographers do have a model release that allows us to use any image we take for our own professional purposes, which typically include advertisements, blog posts about our services, etc. Sometimes a few of these photos end up there. You'll notice a lot of them don't have faces-- probably because the clients gave them permission to use non personally identifiable photos for professional use.

You took the words right out of my mouth. If they're done for the the couple, I think they're beautiful!

If they were framed on a wall, I would think they're weird! lol
  • Katie6126 post.. she posted them to Facebook and I remember thinking... what.. the.....

@kristynikole - Yeah that would be weird to see pop up on Facebook. They seem so personal!

Also, is that wedding photo in your signature at the Hotel Del? I grew up in San Diego and lived there up until 2 years ago!

  • One of my husbands coworkers has these kind of pictures UP ON HER FACEBOOK. We had a good laugh when we saw them, but now I'm traumatized.

  • GlitterMuffin914 yes it is in front of hotel del!
  • Yeah, same way! Never understood them doing such a photos plus to post in online. Ummm, really? No, thank you but I don't want you to show off to me as a naked future mama. But I do understand when girls are taking boudoir photos.
  • I would consider doing something like the ones @lstrecjek posted, but they would never come out or be hung on the wall.  They would be exclusively for hubby and I.

  • I think if done right they can be beautiful. maybe not for me. But still can be beautiful. Also I could probably see myself with a post one like the one @lstrecjek p osted

    My thoughts exactly...

    Same here.
A few years ago my family (yes, my SO and DS also) were given a tour of the home of some family friends we were meeting for the first time. They showed us all rooms and in the master bedroom over the bed hung a poster sized photograph of the wife very naked and pregnant. The image was tasteful and nicely framed, but the situation was sooooo awkward. We just smiled pretended it wasn't there. Not really something we ever expected to see!!!

  • Our wedding photographer offers boudoir photo shoots and then prints a bound book with the photos. I've been thinking about hiring him to do a shoot when I'm further along and then giving DH the book when baby girl is born

  • I find the whole fact that "naked" maternity photos have become an "in-thing" wacky.  Naked maternity photos are just weird and creepy to me.  I guess I can understand if you want them for you and your husband; however, when they end up all over the internet it is just ick. Seriously, who wants to see that?
