Spotting at 4 months :(-*****UPDATE******

I need some advice ladies!

The past 2 days I have had mild cramping (down there, and what I thought was Round ligament pain.)

Since yesterday I had 2 instances of VERY light spotting. Blood was bright red, but the spots were literally the size of a couple of pin pricks. I'm crampy today, and freaking out. I'm almost 5 months, so I'm not sure what is going on.

My next appointment is on Wednesday. I've had a bladder infection recently that supposedly was cleared up my doctor said. I also have had keytones in my urine from not drinking enough water. (I'm trying hard to get enough.)

I have a fetal doppler, and found the baby's heartbeat right away this morning, which made me feel a bit better.

My question being, have any of you experienced spotting this late in the game? I feel like I've called my doctor every week lately. I don't know if I should wait until they check me out on Wednesday, or go in.

Any advice or assurance is much appreciated. :)

  • I had a little bit of spotting last Saturday at 16 weeks 6 days. It was very minimal, almost more like pink discharge. I'm at the doc now though, and just saw baby moving all around on ultrasound.
Fingers crossed everything is fine with your LO!

  • I've been having brown blood for the past two weeks. It's not everyday (maybe every other day), and it's also not a lot, but in some instances I saw small brown clots. I feel the baby moving and have been to the doc twice since this started happening. There is no bleeding around the baby or next to the uterus. My doc thinks it's polyp on the cervix that twisted off??? I had an A/S last Thursday and everything seemed fine with the baby. So I'm not as worried anymore....
My Doc said that as long as it's brown blood, she's not really concerned. I would call your Doc and see what she wants you to do just to be on the safe side.

  • The blood hasn't been brown for me. It's definately bright red spots. No clotting or anything. Just little bright red pin pricks. No blood or anything when I wipe.

I'll give my doc a call and see what she has to say. Thanks, ladies.
  • I have no advice but I'd call for peace of mind.

  • I've had pin pricks of bright red blood twice after having a hard bowel movement. But I'd definitely call for piece of mind.

  • I had this with DS late in pregnancy, around the 18-20 week mark, I called the doc when it happened and was told if I'm not using a liner or filling one within an hour not to worry. I felt like I was calling all the time and actually apologized to the nurse once, she laughed and said not to worry they're there to answer questions and reassure moms to be. If you are worried enough to post here, I would call your doc for ease of mind.

  • Two weeks ago I had gushes of red blood literately running down my legs in the doc office when I disrobed for my exam. They did an ultra sound and the baby was fine, it was all done with the bleeding after an hour and spotting stopped a day later.

I would try not to worry unless it picks up :)
  • I had blood running into the toilet last week and everything was fine. My doctor said that some spotting is normal during pregnancy since there are so many changes going on in the body. It could also be from a sensitive cervix. She said if the blood stops fairly quickly and there isn't severe cramping it's probably nothing to worry about.

  • I don't have any late bleeding experience but I would call for sure. They should be able to at least ease some fears. Hang in there!

This. And it scared me because I've had cramping on and off the whole pregnancy, but much less a know that I'm staying hydrated. That was several weeks ago and all is well at almost 19 weeks. If it helps to ease your concerns I'd call the dr.
  • @RileyForever, I'm glad you're getting in for an appointment today! Let us know how it goes.

@BoraBoraBaby, I've had cramping too...you're a few weeks ahead of me, but is it normal to have cramping off and on? I guess it's not every day, but it seems to come around fairly often. Never any bleeding, just cramping. I assume it could be RLP as well - I don't know how to tell the difference!

  • OH btw the medical term she used was "Friable Cervix" Apparetly this means my cervix just has more blood flow going to it and bleeds easily. Lovely!
  • @RileyForever

Glad everything was okay, but sorry you're in pain! Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

I had cramping nearly every day for a stretch there, and it scared me so much. Felt like my period was coming on and even my lower back would hurt, just like a period. I was told to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Sometimes the cramping would last all day and if I'd drink tons of water, they'd be gone the next day and back a few days later.
Now that I'm drinking regularly, I rarely have cramping. But yes cramping can be very normal. Remember all the growth that has to happen, it doesn't just impact your uterus but everything down there has to move around to make room. Doing some yoga stretches can also help, and getting up for walks.
Severity of the cramping varies from woman to woman but definitely bounce this off your midwife or OB. Mine wasn't concerned so after time I stopped worrying as much.
  • @beff12 you can pm me if you want to discuss more. I know it's scary stuff but it sounds like you're probably having the same discomfort I was and I am willing to bet you and baby are just fine.

  • Thanks for all of the kind words, ladies! It appears that the cervical exam and swabbing yesterday really did a number on me.

Everytime I pee, I'm wiping mass amounts of brown blood away and I'm still cramping and sore. I know with the friable cervix thing, this is common after a cervical exam, but it's still quite alarming to see blood on a pad or on the toilet paper. At least it's totally brown, and not red, right?

Just left a message with my doc to confirm this was normal. I just want a normal day of feeling good. I have hit the 18 week mark today though :)
