How many outfits did you need for yourself at the hospital?

I tried looking up the hospital bag thread but couldn't find it anywhere! If anyone can post a link to it I would be very grateful :)

I'm wondering how many outfits you STMs found you needed or made use of at the hospital for yourself. So far I have a pair of button up pajamas, a warm robe, 2 pairs of yoga paints, a nursing top, a zip up jacket, a second non-nursing top that can be used for nursing, and 2 nursing/sleeping bras. This along with a towel has totally filled up my carry on luggage and I'm thinking it may be too much... thoughts?

  • I think that's too much. I stayed in the same pajamas and robe until I left. Granted I only had a 24 hour stay. I suppose you might need more if you end up having a c-section or otherwise staying longer. You could consider throwing the extra clothes into another bag that you leave in the car or even at home, to be used in that event.

  • I will have one night gown, one pair of pajama pants, a nursing top, one nursing bra, underwear in case I have a c-section and won't need the hospital ones, and my going home clothes (tshirt and yoga pants), slippers and a robe.
  • I had c/s so needed one extra days worth. i wore a couple nursing tanks, nursing bras, a robe, a few pairs of pants and a few loose, drapey sweaters. So not far off from you. Why are you bringing your own towels? They had toiletries at my hospital, towels and even a hairdryer.

Someone had suggested it online but I'll make a note of what my hospital provides during our tour on the 22nd and will make sure not to bring those things.

  • That sounds like a lot.  I'm just taking a nursing tank, a tshirt, and yoga pants for after delivery.  I'll wear home the same outfit I came in.  I don't mind wearing the same tank and yoga pants two days in a row so long as I have a couple changes of underwear, and if I really needed more clothes someone could go back to my house and get me more so I'm not worried about it.

  • I admit. I'm bringing two sets of clothes for each of the four days I'll be there. But I'm super weird about being able to change clothes a lot if I want to. It just makes me feel better, more put together, happier. Plus, my SO will likely be out of town and I don't want someone to have to go out of their way to come to my place and get more stuff. I'd rather have too much than not enough.
  • I don't mind wearing the same outfit two days in a row. I guess I did pack too much! I think I might just pack my pajamas, robe, yoga pants, and nursing tank. That seems more reasonable. It's also a good idea to leave the other clothes in another bag just in case.

  • I packed going home outfit and 1 pair of yoga pants and nursing tank and nursing bra. I may swap out for yoga capris since the weather in fl is usually hot.
  • Also remember the clothes you'll wear to the hospital. I'll probably wear yoga pants or leggings and a shirt, bring an extra shirt and pants, night gown, and robe or long sweater thing. You'll change from your clothes to a gown pretty much right away, so I count it as another clean outfit.

  • I'm bringing 2-3 pairs of yoga type pants, 2-3 nursing tanks, a light robe, a zip up jacket, a nursing bra and a top I can wear home just in case.

  • I was in the hospital gown until I left. But I had a c-section and could barely move at first so I didn't care. I did have DH get me a robe from home because I wanted to be more covered up when I went down to the nicu. I wore the same outfit home that I wore there - comfy, loose sweats.
  • I wore hospital gowns most of the time along with mesh undies. I put on some clothes for visitors the one day but that was pretty much it. I did have a cotton robe to wear on top of the gowns and for if I wanted to walk anywhere, which I only did to go to the lactation center down the hall.
  • I was planning on just wearing the hospital gown the entire time I'm there so i was pretty much going to wear clothes in and wear the same clothes out and while i was there wear their stuff. Is that not good? I was going to bring undies and a nursing bra
This is my plan too.  Why get my own clothes dirty?  I may add a lightweight robe for walking around though.

I just didn't find the hospital gown very comfortable and preferred to be in my own clothes.

  • I just wore the hospital gowns with a nursing bra the entire time and changed to leggings/long top on the way home.

If your like me and had vaginal delivery, there's a lot of messy stuff they don't warn you about ahead of time that you do NOT want to get on your pretty pjs the first few days.

Hair brush, shampoo, deodorant, etc for when guests come by.
  • ...wore a tank top with mesh undies.
Niiiiiiiiiice.  I bet that was a good look :)

I'm suddenly reminded of when we went on our tour and the guide shared that the water birth contract specifies that partners who enter the birthing tub must wear swimwear.  MH and I got a real kick out of speculating about how many dads to be had to strip off in front of the staff for them to put it in writing.
  • I plan to take my super comfy new robe as well as my Old Navy maternity lounge pants. Seriously they are the most comfortable things I have ever worn. I'll pack a couple of my favorite tank tops and live in those and my lounge pants while I am there. I figure I will wear my lounge pants and a sweatshirt home. I will probably pack my own underwear, but everyone keeps raving about the mesh panties so I will probably just wear those. My goal is to also confiscate as many hospital socks as I can too.

  • For my first, I brought a nursing tank, a sleep bra, a nightgown, and a light robe.  I ended up being there a week, and had DH go get me another nightgown and robe and washing the first set.  I wore the same clothes home that I wore there.  I'll probably bring the same stuff I ended up using the first time for this one.

  • I brought a couple nursing tanks, nursing bra, a pair of stretchy pants and a jacket.  I'm not a robe gal. I slept in the hospital gown.  I wore a tank and the stretchy pants home with the jacket.

  • I was in the hospital from 2 AM on a Sunday until early afternoon on a Tuesday. I brought a bunch of clothes from home but the only thing I wore besides hospital gowns was a pair of yoga pants and a shirt to go home in. The gowns were so much easier for nursing, getting checked for bleeding, etc. and I didn't have to worry about getting my own clothes nasty. Double win.
  • I'm having a RCS... In my bag, I packed: one black jersey robe (to wear over my hospital gown if I have company), one pair of thick socks, one nursing tank, one pair of men's black sweat pants, a maxi dress (in case the sweat pants rub my incision), a nursing bra, and a pullover. I think that's it. I didn't pack undies because I am going to wear the mesh ones. I also packed pajama pants, an undershirt, two pairs of underwear, and a tshirt for DH.

  • I was in 4 nights after my c/s. I was in the gown all of the first day and most of the second until I could shower and change (I had some low BP issues and couldn't get up as soon as I would have liked). I think I wore a pair of nursing PJs that has a little robe and a pair of PJ pants with a nursing tank until I put on my going home clothes the last morning. This time I'm taking 2 nursing PJ sets and an extra nursing tank plus my going home clothes.

  • Let me tell you, those mesh undies are hideous but wonderful! After a c/s having huge comfortable undies is the best. I recommend asking for extras to take home since you'll still be bleeding heavily. It's nice to be able to just throw them out at the end of the day.
  • I wore the hospital gown while I was there.
I took one change of clothes that were more loose than what I wore in because I swelled when I had my first.

I peed my pants while vomiting in the parking lot just before entering the hospital, so I was happy to have that change of clothes.

Also, since I had a gush of blood at one point, I had to change my hospital gown, and if it had been my own clothes, I would have needed someone to get me more.

  • I just started packing today but I plan to take 3 pairs of yoga pants, 2 nursing tanks, 2 zip hoodies, and a coupe pairs of fuzzy socks. With DD I liked having a clean set of clothes each day (minus maybe the nursing tank). It made me feel a little more human. No need to pack undies, the mesh ones are awesome and all I'll need while wt the hospitals and the first couple days at home. I couldn't get comfortable in the hospital gown so I only wore it for delivery and until I was allowed to shower in postpartum.

  • I'm starting to rethink all the things I wanted to bring with me when I made my list of things to pack in my bag now! I was originally going to have two changes of clothes, including fresh bras and undies, along with my robe, slippers, and a couple nightgowns.

Now I'm thinking a pair of yoga pants and a shirt to go home in, nursing bra, robe and slippers; toiletries too, of course, and a change of clothes for DH. I am going to tour the maternity ward when I'm 36 weeks, so I'll have to see what else I can take off the list. I'm sure DH and I won't be too excited to carry a bunch of unnecessary things into the hospital in the midst of starting labor...

Everyone seems to agree the mesh panties are amazing, so I may even ask for a couple pairs to take home with me so I don't have to bother with my own. I don't really have any "maternity" underwear per se, so it'll be nice to be sure that none of my stuff gets ruined... Although, if it does, it's just another reason I'll need to make myself leave the house and get some fresh air postpartum.

You'll still need the mesh underwear if you have a c/s since you'll still be bleeding a lot. Plus they are great because the top isn't too tight on your incision.

  • I brought nursing bras, slippers, flipflops, and toiletries.  I wore the hospital gown and disposable undies while in the hospital and the same thing home that I arrived in (yoga pants and a top).  No one came to see me while in the hospital- they were there to see DD.  If I could have taken the hospital gown home with me, I probably would have worn that for the next week or two as well.

Also, I had a csection, so I was glad I wasn't wearing pants b/c they come and check you regularly and it would have been a PITA to get up and take my pants off every time.

I just don't want to buy a nursing bra yet bc I have no idea how big my boobs are going to get. Sounds like the nursing tank will be the best option.
Can't wait to experience these undies. My sister was just telling me about them yesterday! Haha

  • FTM but I packed 2 pair of yoga pants, 2 nursing tanks, 2 sleep bras, a zip up hoodie and a robe. Plus of course socks, underwear and toiletries. That's what my hospital suggested so it's what I went with. I might throw slippers in the bag and a t shirt for coming home.

Exactly this for me. I'm more comfortable in my own clothes. But I'm thinking about skipping the robe if I have a zip hoodie.

This--possibly even more so because of how most undies hit exactly where the incision is. I knew I was having a c/s so I had granny panties and still had to send out DH to get bigger ones after we got home. I was super sad, though, because the awesome mesh panties caused a major rash on my stomach.
