Needing some advice from a mother's eyes!

I need a mothers perspective!!

We will be traveling to Mexico when the baby is around 5 months old for a destination wedding. We have the britax b ready and b safe but i dont want to take such a nuce stroller on the plane to gate check. I have a friend that has a new travel system with the tag still on the carseat (Evenflo) for 70 bucks. I had planned on getting a snap n go to just snap her carseat into on the vacation.

From a mothers perspective which would be better? At that age would she even be able to use the stroller? I am sure not sitting up but laying down? Would it be bad to have her in her carseat tho most of the week on the snap n go? We have two strollers already, don’t really need another one but of course my Britax carseat doesn’t fit into my graco stroller so that is what is screwing me. Hope this makes sense sorry for the rambling and thanks for any insight!

  • We had DD in the snap n go until 9m old. I think that would be fine. I definitely would not bring a stroller you care about to gate check, they always get damaged. From my experience when you travel abroad, strollers are pretty useless. You're usually dealing with pavestones sidewalks and stairs everywhere. Stroller won't do you any good at the beach either. You're better off using the stroller for the airport then babywearing when you're exploring Mexico. We just came back from a week in the Caribbean and did not use the stroller once.

  • I think buying an additional infant seat and snap n go specifically for travel is a huge waste of money.  If I were to buy a travel carseat I would put the money towards a convertible travel seat.  This maybe the only trip the additional bucket/snap n go make whereas a convertible will last years.

Personally, I bring my nice stroller on vacation.  At one point I had considered buying a travel stroller but I love my nice stroller and like having the comfort of it especially on vacation where we tend to do a lot of walking.  We gate check our stuff and haven't had issues with damages.

  • FTM but in your situation I would just plan to wear LO in a carrier rather then hauling a car seat and stroller to the Caribbean and back. There are quite a few options out there. I know of a couple places that even make gauze/mesh fabric ring slings specifically for baby wearing while in the water and heat.

  • Are you going to an all-inclusive resort?  The ones we've stayed in have had most baby equipment on-site, so that people don't need to schlep it all over the place.  We took our own car seat to Club Med when DS1 was 2 months old, but the resort provided a stroller, pack n' play, baby bath tub, and changing table.

Call ahead; you might not need to worry about it at all.

  • At 5 months getting DS in the bucket seat was a chore. He preferred being directly in the stroller. I would wait and see.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • My daughter hated being in her bucket seat in the stroller at that age. She wanted to sit up and look around. I would buy a cheap convertible to be used specifically for travel and then see if you can rent a stroller there. If not I would get an umbrella stroller where the seat can also recline (for naps at the pool/out and about).

  • Thanks for all the help ladies FTM I was having a hard time deciding how well she would sit up in a stroller at that age so you all have really helped!

  • We've never traveled via airport with DS, but on the few small trips we've taken I've opted for the carseat and snap N go or the umbrella stroller once he was too big for the carseat.  He loved it and I loved the convenience.  However, I do agree that you should hold off until your LO arrives and you see what the preference is; some kids can literally sleep in their carseat and others flip the hell out and hate it.  You could honestly pick up a carseat/snap n go/stroller/whatever at any BRU/BBB the day before you left if you had to.  It's not something you need now.

  • We bought a super cheap stroller for airports.  That way if it got damaged gate checking it we would get over it pretty quickly.  I think a stroller makes moving through the airport WAY easier.

That said my kid was out of his infant seat and in the convertible by 5 months and he had no trouble with the umbrella stroller at that age, although we have a Britax Blink and it has quite a few recline options so he wasn't as upright as a lot of umbrella strollers.
No she will not have her own seat. We actually have an extra infant seat that was given to us that will expire the end of the year so i was going to use that, gate check it and use it on vacation. The hubbys car is a pretty big pile so she will not really be in there much so figured wed get a convertible for him after the trip sometime (hopefully a black friday or cyber monday thing) and then we wouldnt have to worry about using that infant seat again since it was just going to be a spare anyways.
