Positive for strep b

I posted the other day asking for experience with stripping membranes. I guess I don't get the chance to try it as I just got a call that I tested positive for strep B. Ugh. :-( I shouldn't have googled it as now I'm more nervous about this. Calm me!!

Really? I had mine stripped at the end of my last pregnancy and then got the dose of antibiotics during labor. She had no issues.

My OB told me he won't strip them if my test came back positive. :-( He said something about not wanting to introduce the bacteria. Maybe in case he ruptured my water too? Not sure....

  • I had it last time. It really is not a big deal they are just being very cautious now days. I had my first 4 before they even started testing moms for this. They just want to get 2 rounds of antibiotics at least in you before baby is born. I didn't have time for 2 rounds Alexis was born less then 2 hours of going into labour. They just checked he blood, which they do anyways. The doctors weren't worried about it at all.

  • Yes getting your membranes strip could cause a tear small leak and not send you into labour then you are even at more risk.

  • I'm positive for group strep b as well.  I don't see the problem with getting your membranes stripped if your doctor needs to.  You just need to make sure you have a dosage of antibiotics during labor.  They will make sure you have a dosage every four hours.  You don't need to be attached to an IV the whole time, either.

Did you get the call directly from your doctor? When is your next appointment? This was actually the biggest period of stress for me -- from when I first found out until I had my appointment with my doctor.  Once I saw her and she talked with me very calmly, I felt much better about all of.  It really is fine - try not to rely on Dr. Google too much or else you will become PETRIFIED. You're going to be fine and so is LO.  This is why we do these tests!

  • I was also positive last time and had my membranes stripped. I didn't realize there was a reason not to, and my doctor didn't say anything, but I guess the reasoning makes sense. All was fine with us, but I guess it's up to the doctor!

Thank you. My doctor spoke with me on Friday about the different scenarios, but got the call from his office. Our next appt is on Thursday, February 13th...close to 38 weeks.

The reason some doctors will not strip membrane  if Group b positive is because if you did get a tear and it went unnoticed strep b can cause issues well before you go into labour. So getting antibiotics days or a week later if it doesn't work if the baby is already exposed.

Thanks for the explanation! I'll have to ask my doctor for more information/clarity because we discussed stripping membranes as an alternative to pitocin all during the same appointment that we first discussed group b strep.  I feel like I'm always learning something new.
