Wheezing and noisy breathing?

DS has had a hard time breathing all day. It's like wheezing breaths and he makes these noises while he does it. I've also put my hand on his back and it feels like a little bit of rasping in his lungs. He also has a very small fever (99.3 last time I checked).

The thing is, I've read that wheezing is sometimes normal? I called his doctor and they said it might be able to wait until tomorrow (they were just about to close due to the weather) or I could take him to the ER. I know it sounds awful, but I have a medicaid card and I don't think it covers him. We can afford a doctor's visit but not another huge ER bill.

He's not having any other problems, he's eating okay and he's not crying or even looking upset. He's sleeping just like he normally does. Would you wait to see if anything else happens and just go to the pediatrician in the morning, or go ahead and take him to the ER?

Re: Wheezing and noisy breathing?

  • It really depends. I'm a FTM, so I would probably take him in because breathing stuff isn't something to mess with.  If the doctor's office didn't think it was that serious though, I might wait. Could you call to check if your Medicaid card covers him? I would think if it covers doctor's appointments it would cover an ER visit.

  • My son wheezes a lot too. It freaked me out at first but now that he does it so often it's almost normal to me. The pediatrician said when I brought it up "Well babies make strange noises".

  • My lo is just getting over RSV- here is what my pediatrician told me- Strip them down- can you see their ribs when they are breathing? Or is their stomach concave? How many breaths a minute is he taking? Are the breaths shallow? Does he look like he can't catch his breath? Or is stopping breathing (looks like he's holding his breath?) is he blue around his lips? Is he coughing? Is he congested (mucusy?) is the wheezing coming from his chest? Can you hear noises in his chest?

Small breaths, not necessarily shallow. He might not breathe for a second then take 2-3 quick breaths. No snot or anything, I can't hear anything in his chest but I could feel it a little bit earlier.

He actually seems to be doing a lot better? I sent DH to get some medicine to put in his vaporizer and I'm just keeping an eye on him for now.
(I called the hospital and they told me my card would cover him, so if he starts to get bad again we are going to take him.)

  • If he isn't retracting, and isn't pale or going blue, I wouldn't be super concerned and it can wait until the morning.  Babies breath weird at this age, they wheeze, take rapid breaths, make weird noises.  It's all normal from my experience and what my midwives reminded me of when I had DS2.  I would just be worried if I could see retractions, if he was not eating well or was crying a lot, or of his colour was off.

I was gonna say he should he covered under Medicaid, but then read you confirmed it :) What pp's said. Or if he seems to be off, or struggling to breathe. I think it's always better to be safe than sorry. I hope everything is ok!

  • @casholmes- how is the baby feeling this morning? I've been thinking of you guys, hope you are doing ok!

Thank you! His wheezing is a little worse (he's sitting with his mouth wide open, but not really breathing through it?), I think my niece gave him a little cold- he sounds congested. We're gonna go see the pedi this morning. :)

    Thanks everyone!

Just FYI, babies don't breathe through their mouths at all for the first few months. Also, my baby will randomly have noisy breathing with some sighing and grunting sounds, and my understanding is that this is pretty typical newborn behavior.

  • @casholmes. Glad you are going to the pediatrician. Let us know what they say! I'm hoping it's just a little cold and nothing more serious!
