Toddlers: 24 Months+

Child Minding rate etc...

Morning everyone!

I stay at home with my daughter, and recently put an ad up for part time babysitting/child minding just to get some extra spending money.
I have an interview with a lady who is interested in part time care of her 15 month old, 3-4 times a week. I have No idea what to charge, since I'm sure she's going to ask my opinion on that.
What would you parents fairly pay for full-day part time care?
Should I charge an hourly rate? or if its 3 times a week at 8hrs a day, do a flat rate?
How about 3-5 hrs per day that is worked,( lets say she is going back 4 days a week but a minimum of 4 hrs per shift?)

I assume I will be preparing her daughters meals etc....
If any of you do child minding at home for someone, or are paying someone to watch your LO, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading!

Re: Child Minding rate etc...

  • I watched twins in my home for about 4 months, they were around 11 months old when I started.  I was paid $30 a day and she provided food.  The twins got dropped off at 8 and picked up by 4.  I used a mix of her provided food and my food for lunches, breakfast, and snacks (example: her blueberries and carrot sticks went with my pb&j and milk for lunch).

This was a very low rate and I only agreed to it because she was having a hard time and it was short term.  I would charge $25 - $30 a child per day, depending on if you are using your food or not.

Good luck!  Extra spending money is always nice!

  • Where are you?  This is HIGHLY dependent on location.
Here in the greater Seattle area, I charge the family whose kid I watch $50/day for available hours of 7:30-4:30.  It's not on the cheapest end of things, but it's also not on the highest end of things either.  For in-home with no other kids.  (I don't charge them for sick days and the like, since I'm not holding spots open.)  And that covers all the food and craft supplies we use.

  • Thanks for your responses! I live in a really nice suburb out in the Toronto,Ontario area...I was looking at $50 a day. I think for any less it wouldn't be worth it, I'll see what she says with that rate in mind.

  • Honestly, that was part of my consideration - what was the value *I* put on my time.  Of course, I wouldn't have been offended if they thought that price wasn't something they were comfortable with and they said they would go somewhere else.

Don't forget to talk about who is covering outtings (I take the other kid with us to places that sometimes have admission fees), and food, and wipes/diapers (if appropriate), and so on.  And vacation days and sick policy.  We keep things really informal, but we talked about all of that ahead of time to find an agreement.

We are in Chicago, so rates are higher.  But I watch a little boy in our home along with my two and charge $375 a week for full-time.  That includes breakfast, lunch, snack and milk.  They can bring him for up to 10 hours a day, but the mom works really close by, so he's here no more than 8 1/2 hours a day.  If he's sick or on vacation they still pay, if I'm sick or on vacation they do not pay.  The only exception to that is holidays, where I receive full pay.

PP has a good point too, you have to think about how formal you want this arrangement to be.  We have signed contract that outlines their obligations and mine.  I wanted it to be a more formal set-up.
  • Thank you, I will def. asking about sick days etc.
also, someone asked if I wanted to do before and after school care.
I guess an hour before anda few hrs after. The child is 3, and I wouldn't have to drop them off or pick them up because the school has a bus.

any suggestions? The internet says 20-30 bucks a day.
