what do you do if LO oversleeps?

Weve gotten down to a rough achedule
, but yall know how babies are... nothing is ever on schedule lol. Usually DD takes an hour long nap but lately some of them have been 2-2.5 hours sometimes. What do you do when LO oversleeps? Wake them up? Let them sleep? Do you push their naps back? Skip the 2nd nap and bedtime early? Thanks!

Re: what do you do if LO oversleeps?

  • I would let them sleep.  If they are only napping for an hour and are starting to nap longer, maybe they are in the process of dropping from 2 naps down to 1 longer nap.  I would start playing with that morning nap...try moving it back a bit and then just play it by ear the rest of the day.  Maybe push the 2nd nap back a bit and it will be shorter or maybe keep them up and do bed a bit earlier.  Dropping from 2 naps to 1 usually takes a bit of trial and error.

I don't really consider anytime DS2 sleeps longer than usual to be oversleeping.  I usually jump for joy!

This.  My DS has been trying to drop his morning nap for almost 2 months.  We still aren't there.  It takes awhile.

This.  The transition from 1 to 2 naps can be long and takes trial and error.  It took us about 3 months to finally get settled to just 1 nap.  The last step was moving the nap from 11 am to noon.  He sometimes still can't make it to noon (daycare wants him to nap at noon to better fit with their schedule).

  • I personally operate under the motto "never wake a sleeping baby", but that may be why we're still not on a very set schedule- I wake her up weekday mornings because I have to in order to get to work on time, but other than that I let her sleep- her body knows when she needs sleep better than I do.

  • I never wake her. She slept for almost 3 hours today. Fine with me!

  • At that age, I would consider cutting down to one afternoon nap.  I let my DD sleep as long as she wants in the afternoon.  Her naps are anywhere from 2-4 hours and I don't see an issue with it.
  • Let lo sleep. DD naps anywhere from 1-3 hours. I figure if she sleeps 3 hours she needed the sleep. She still goes to bed at the same time, no matter how long the nap is. She switched to one nap right at a year old.
  • I guess I don't think they oversleep. I rarely wake unless we need to literally leave for somewhere or if they were getting way too close to bed time.
    Same here.

  • Babies don't oversleep. If yours is taking longer naps they might be going through a physical or mental growth spurt, or they might just be tired for whatever reason. I would allow it and then shift their schedule for the day accordingly. DS now only naps once a day so if he sleeps longer or we need to move his nap a little either way, we're able to do it easily. When he was taking 2 naps, we tried to keep to the same schedule as much as possible but also followed his cues and never woke him up from a nap (unless needing to leave).

My other thought is that she might be ready to move to a 1 nap schedule but you'll be the best judge of that. What time does she take her first nap? For us it was a gradual process and completely baby-led but definitely not simple and it took about 2 weeks to happen. His first nap simply started happening later and later, to the point that a 2nd nap didn't make sense anymore. Somedays he took 2 naps, others just one and we had an early bed time. Once he moved to one nap completely, he was taking his first nap at noon (bedtime at 8pm) and overtime we moved it to 12:30 pm and then to 1 pm, which is his regular nap time now.

  • What do I do?

    Rejoice.

Considering we are in the middle of teething/a sleep regression/ who knows what else and DS has decided his wake up time should be 5:45am, anything beyond that is a sleep miracle to me these days. We do our best to NEVER wake a sleeping kiddo.

  • I wake him up if it's within two hours of bedtime but that's it.

  • The only time I ever stop an over-extended nap is if it's the last nap of the day. If my daughter sleeps past 4:30pm she's hell to get to sleep come bedtime.
