False alarm trips to L&D: who's been there? TMI

Sigh. I just returned from my SECOND false alarm trip to L&D in three weeks thinking my membranes were broken. I'm 39 + 5 and maybe a little trigger happy.

TMI: I've had a crazy amount of watery discharge (no gush but occasionally filling a pad) and of course if you google such a thing you convince yourself you are leaking amniotic fluid. And today it smelled weird (sorry). So I made DH take the morning off work and take me there. They were really nice and all, but I feel embarrassed having been twice for nothing! Gah. And they tell you to come in no matter what if you suspect something, but I can't shake the feeling that they were side-eying me a bit.

Anyway, I feel bad for making DH take the day off work and wasting the time of medical professionals. Also, this isn't my first dog and pony show and I feel like I should know better as an STM, but seriously I have never had discharge like this. What I learned: baby is fine and I need to learn patience. Oh, and dry speculums are awwwwesome.

Has anyone else done a false alarm trip to L&D? How was your experience? Did you feel like a tool, or just glad for the reassurance? I know a lot of ladies on here have serious pregnancy complications, so no one is side-eying you for heading in when something is up. I'm looking at those of you who have had fairly normal pregnancies and have visited out of paranoia/weird symptoms/ misjudging symptoms. Please tell me I am not the only lunatic out there. :/

  • STM, totally went to L&D b/c I had been leaking a lot one day. The nurse said increased discharge happens, especially the second pregnancy. It's better to go in and be sure rather then worry or not go in when you need to!

  • I felt like I got side-eyed at L&D even when my OB sent me over from her office.  It was New Years Eve and baby's heartrate sounded off and I was having reduced movement.  Of course, everything was fine but yeah... I kind of felt like the nurse was secretly judging me for wasting her time/bed.

I hope this doesn't come off as rude sounding (I really don't mean for it sound snarky), but did you call your doctor first before you went to the hospital?

Hopefully next time is the real deal.  :)

  • Spent an hour getting monitored Saturday night after having contractions all and night. Got sent home because I made no progress and they eventually stopped later that night. Boo

  • @PinkLillyLover, not rude at all. The first time I waited until my check up that day, but she said she couldn't check me because it would tamper with the amniotic fluid test results, which they can only do at the hospital where I am. So she said next time to just go straight to L&D. Also, she's leaving for Hawaii today or tomorrow and even the hospital had a tough time getting a hold of her.

Gotcha!  I just know my doctor said call him first, that's why I asked.  :)

Sending you lots of baby dust!!!

  • Yep, totally been there...in fact 5 times now. Blah. The first 4 were for PTL contractions and issues. Thankfully, they were able to get the contractions to stop back then. I still felt silly for going in so many times but I didn't want to take any chances with my LO coming out too early.

This past Saturday though I went it because I was sure things were happening and at 39 weeks and 4 days I was happy for things to be moving along (I still can't believe that I have made it this long with all of the PTL issues we had). I started having regular contractions 8 minutes apart and 6+ hours later they were down to 4 minutes apart and painful. Plus (TMI warning), I had been going to the bathroom so many times that day, not quite diarrhea but pretty close, and having lots of stringy discharge that I thought that again I was ready to go. We headed to the hospital (after calling my midwife) and they checked me...and nothing had changed from my last appointment (still 1 cm, 50%, and -1) I was devastated. They told me to walk around and that would probably get things moving...several hours later and still no change other than my contractions getting stronger (bouncing up to around 68/100 on their monitors). So they sent me home to get some sleep with the help of some meds and see if things progressed more at home (however, most of the nurses insinuated that I probably wouldn't be back for another week). I left crying because I couldn't believe I had fallen for another false alarm. My mom even drove up the 4 hours to be with me and got there just in time for them to send me home. I don't really know if the nurses were side-eyeing me when we walked out because I was just too depressed and my eyes were puffy from crying so much (I am really starting to detest these pregnancy hormones, I swear don't cry like this normally!).

I am really starting to feel like the boy who cried wolf. I am not sure if my husband or I will really know when it is actually time to go unless I get the movie worth gush of water! I know lots of people have been telling me that I will know when it is time ("You'll know when you know"). But after having contractions for so long (past 12 weeks now) I am not sure I will know with just contractions. Now, I am not supposed to leave for the hospital until my contractions are 3 minutes apart (which they have been in the past) and I cannot bare the pain anymore...we live 45+ minutes from the nearest hospital so that is going to be a FUN car ride.

Oh, I like you I have been having a lot of the watery discharge since Sunday! I too have started to need to start wearing pads so I don't keep feeling like I have constantly wet myself. I am too embarrassed to go back and ask for the test after Saturday so I am hoping my doc will be able to check things out tomorrow at my appointment.

Anyway, I would tell you as others have told me...don't feel bad about going in to get checked out! It very well could have been time for you and really it doesn't matter what others think. Sending you lots of happy baby dust and hoping that the next time you head to L&D it really is time! :)
  • Eeek...I didn't mean to write a novel. I guess I really needed to vent. Sorry about that! Again, Lots of happy baby dust going your way!

  • Twice, both times sent by my doctor after/during a checkup. First time for contractions, second time for the baby's decreased heartbeat and listlessness. Both times everything ended up ok, thank G-d. Here's hoping the next time is the big time. :)
  • I have been to the hospital twice for false labor and both times they nurses blew me off and were rude despite having steady contractions, they would always send me home after an hour and say everything was fine and I should come back if my contractions were too painful to talk through which they were everytime I went it!
  • STM here and went to l&d x3 so no worries.
  • I've been twice for false labor, they were pretty rude. I went in both times vomiting in pain with contractions every 4-5 minutes. But I didn't dilate, very frustrating. I hope the next time is the real deal,

  • I've been to L&D twice but not for contractions/false labor. I went in for no movement for over 24 hours both times. The nurses were absolutely wonderful both times. I'm so sorry so many of you had to deal with rude, unprofessional nurses :(
