Gift for Boss

I'm leaving my job this week (mostly; a few meetings still over the next month) after a long transition. What can I get for my boss??? I'd like to get her some kind of thank you/farewell gift but can't come up with anything and now it's down to the wire. I do have a farewell party for me on March 7 so I could wait until then, I guess, but I was thinking of leaving something this week before I leave. I don't know.

I could do a nice dinner gift certificate, as she likes dining out at nice places, but that's all I can come up with. She's been very good to me and although she's only been my boss for a few years we've worked together for nearly 12.

Also, how much do I spend? I was thinking like $50??

Same question, different person: I also want to get something for an assistant type person in my department who I have worked with for a long time and who has been very kind and thoughtful. Ideas? Spend same amount?

Re: Gift for Boss

  • a dinner gift certificate is a good idea..or nice bottle of wine/champagne. how much you want to spend is totally up to you. i personally would probably spend $100 but do what you are comfortable with.  i would probably do something a little less for the admin-maybe like am amex gift card for $25 or something .

  • I would feel weird receiving something of monetary value from a subordinate. Never pass down baked goods though. Maybe make something and say you wanted to leave on a sweet note?
  • Ugh. I seriously hate it when subordinates give me gifts. Something edible or flowers would be good. But the gift that meant the most to me was a card and letter from a subordinate thanking me for having been a great mentor. It was really, really sweet and I kept it.

For your admin, I think gift cards are always good. Esp the ones from Visa or Amex that can be used anywhere.
  • I don't know, I'll think about it. I don't think our relationships here are "typical" boss/subordinate type things. This is more just a person-to-person thing both with the admin and boss, regardless of our level. We've all worked together for many years.
