Things Got Real #2810

Things got real last night when DH and I were going to bed, and I realized that DH has been keeping on pants and a shirt for bed. He said that when third trimester hits, he wants to be ready at any time. He has 2 kids with his first wife, and apparently knows about having the "It's happening" wake-up shake in the middle of the night.

I'm not even IN my third trimester yet, but DH is set. Meanwhile I'm just worried about making it to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Panicked breathing, anyone?

Re: Things Got Real #2810

  • Ive been panicking about going into labor when my husband isnt home. I have no other way to get to the hospital if he is at work and we live 30+ minutes from the OBs hospital. >.<

  • thanks for the reminder! i will be ordering a water-proof mattress pad today.
  • That is such a tv dad thing to do. I can't help from laughing.
I know! I picture it being loud and crinkly every time that I roll over!
  • I have not thought about this at all. I still feel like May is soooo far away still. In my mind I just think my little guy won't come till right around his due date or way after. I'm also a end of May mom so baby this will all hit once I get closer to 30 weeks.

Yes, that's pretty much my husband. He means so well, but I picture him doing things like taking scenic back roads to get to the hospital in the hopes that it will calm me down before labor, or not remembering the car seat, or thinking that he needs to run home from the hospital real quick to grab another camera...
  • Since we're planning on a home birth I'm not too worried about it. I wasn't worried last time since the goal was to labor at home as long as possible, hopefully getting to the hospital around 7-8cm+. That's the goal this time as well if we end up risking out & back with my OB. We keep a mattress protector on the bed since mattress warranties are void if there's any staining on the mattress & I eat & drink in bed.

  • I'm a FTM but it's my understanding in MOST situations it's not like a sudden "OH IT'S TIME TO GO!"... it's usually gradual and can take hours before it's even time to go to the hospital - some hospitals will even turn you away if you're not far enough along. This has helped my labor fears =) DH will be working about an hour from where we live and the hospital we're delivering at is another hour in the other direction... I'm just keeping my fingers crossed I'm not one of those zero to delivery people!
  • I'm not worried about this at all. DH works about 30 minutes away, the birth center is another 90 miles away from our home. Once I figure out that I am in labor I will be heading home to get ready to leave.

  • I think my biggest panic is going into labor at work, my daughter being at daycare, me being a long while from the hospital and my husband being out on a delivery (since he's a delivery driver).

  • That is the cutest thing I've heard all day!!!! Your husband is adorable....I told my husband about it and he said well I might lay some stuff out but that will be good. Lol! ;)
  • My OB told me today that since LO is so low already I might have a quicker delivery and might not go full term. I don't know the validity of that but I'm not too upset by it. :-)

    I also LOL'd at the OP..so cute!

  • I've done the plastic sheet thing when I stayed at a youth hostel in Amsterdam. It's not that bad actually. Better safe than sorry!

  • From personal experience, which obviously varies from mother to mother, when my water "broke," it was in small intermittent gushes. I thought at first that I was leaking pee to be frank. I just wore a pad for a few hours and noticed that pad had a slight pink tinge to it. I called the Labor and delivery desk and talk to one of the nurses. She said if I it was indeed my water breaking, I would fill 3-4 pads an hour. So, I started keeping track around 6 pm and by midnight it was obvious that I was filling that much. Called the desk again and they insisted I come in. Honestly, being my first baby, I didn't want to come off as that paniky mom, so I took my time, shower, shaved, ate....etc. Contraction timing was not in my mind till we started the 45 min drive to the hospital (took a total of two hours after I made the call to get to the hospital) and once I was on the table being checked, that's when that "GUSH" hit the floor, literally!! LOL!!

I know I babbled, but my suggestions to new mom's, a pad can do alot of work if you don't want spend the money on a waterproof mattress protector. Most of us have pads in the house and you know after you get home from the hopsital, the pads will come in handy as you recover to save a few pairs of panties. This is my plan at least.

Also, many of us don't even experience that watering breaking gush till after you arrive to the hospital. I'd say only about 10% of my friends that have children actually experienced the infamous "my water broke" dilemma. The majority had to have the doc do it for them.

Sorry about the lengthy post :-)

My coworker told me about a fabulous idea - those puppy pads you can get (like absorbent big square pads), she put one on her mattress but under her sheet when she got close in case her water broke it would absorb any liquid.
  • or you can get those 'over-nights' for kids learning to potty train. It's similar to a puppy pad, goes ontop of the bedsheet and stay in place by stickies.
