Driving 1200 miles w/lo's- crazy?!

So our fam is going to be moving (again, sigh) in a few months. Logistically it would be much easier if I drove our truck with the boys (we have 3 pets, 2 cars, a moving truck etc so it would be so much more ideal if its feasible). I'm wondering if anyone's done it and if I'm crazy? It would be me and my mom, our 2 cats, a dog and the boys (who will be 22 months at the time). My thought is splitting it up I over 3, 6 hour days or 2, 9 hour days. Am I crazy for even thinking this or has anyone done it successfully? TIA.

  • Mayyyybe the 3 days, but nothing more intense than that.. Are you doing all of the driving? or will your mom be of any help with that?
I agree with @sing4mysavior about the activities and shorter drives, unless it's slightly possible your crew sleeps well and at a routine time, even in the car. I know my two won't do that. One is a screamer and has hated the carseat since she was born. My dogs are also nutso, and they need to be walked frequently.
I'm hyperventilating just thinking about this! lol

  • We drive two 7-8hr days a few times a year to see DH's family. It's not fun but only because driving is never fun. The kids do fine. I'd pick 2 days over 3 because I'm not THAT much more exhausted going a few more hours in a day but I would be with a 3rd day trapped in a car. If your babies were newborns I'd pick more days, fewer hours, but if they do well in the car then I say get it over with as quickly as possible. We don't stop at playgrounds or for anything except food and a hotel for the night. Our kids just watch movies, eat snacks in their car seats and I bring some new toys for them. They do great. They sleep part of it. We try to get hotels with a pool and hope we get there in time to use it. We don't have pets though so I don't know what to advise with them.

We use these for snacks and coloring, etc. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000KJBFC8?cache=8ba9b4b2642431a04d3df82a7da51a6e&pi=SX200_QL40#ref=mp_s_a_1_1&qid=1391393165&sr=8-1

I actually use them more on a day to day basis so my kids can eat lunch in the car, but I bought them for long trips.
  • Thanks ladies. @lucyricardo3 I just laughed out loud at your response about hyperventilating. I pretty much am hyperventilating about the whole thing, but that's another story :). @caden those trays are AWESOME!!! Thank you for the recommendation. We actually have family in NC which is about 8 hours so we could stop and stay there which would be great, and our longest driving day. I'm feeling hopeful now....thanks for the replies!

  • I do want to emphasize that we could only do it with DVDs for the kids. Those are the key, for us at least!
  • @caden- how old are your lo's (or how old we're they when they traveled the long distance)?

  • We've taken a few road trips over the past couple years with our 3yo (twins are on the inside still). The 6 hour days would be about our max, but she's a car seat hater. We stop often. Even a few minutes running around at a rest area is good. Snacks in the car mess with meals but also help keep her from getting too restless. Stop and sightsee if you can, and if they fall asleep, run with it! Bring a few new books or toys to take their minds off the drive. Even the happy meal toys have great road trip value. Plus, they get to get their wiggles out at the play place. Puzzle books are baaaad for road trips though, even for the hotel rooms because they will remember about them when you get back into the car, and that is not good. Good luck!

My boys are a little over 3. We've been driving with them to my ILs about 2-3x a year since they were 14m old. (Before that we flew.)
