i originally posted this yesterday in the daily symptom thread but never received any responses so i wanted to see if anyone had any advice. thanks
hey ladies, i just got back from a dental check up and was diagnosed with periodontal disease. joy. apparently its really common with pregnant women because of our hormones, etc. has anyone had this happened to you? they want me to get it treated and i will check with my ob, but wanted to see if you all had any experience or advice to give. i am a regular flosser so this is quite annoying to me....grrrrrrrr.
I just had a checkup yesterday to find that I'm in the early stages of of gum disease, too. I am FLOORED, as I've never been told I had problems with my gums before and I take great care of my teeth. So you're not the only one. I'm hoping that it's mostly just the hormones and will fade away after this LO comes. In the meantime, according to my hygienist, impeccable home care.
I did the whole routine she wants me to do every night and it took 20 minutes. Ain't nobody got time for that. Still, I plan to try. I like my teeth in my head, thank you.
Were you a little embarrassed when they told you, as if it reflected badly on your hygiene? Or am I the only one?
I go to the dentist in about a month and I'm terrified at what they are going to say. I floss all the time and my gums have REALLY started to bleed everytime. I know this is pregnancy related so let's hope it all disappears after!! Good luck!
@yayksimp i was super embarrassed and also pissed off. i pride myself on taking care of my teeth so hearing this just made me mad. i googled (a lot) last night and this is definitely a symptom of pregnancy. i am going to talk with my ob about it at my next checkup and in the meantime i will just keep flossing and brushing at night. hopefully this will subside after LO is out!
I don't know why it's happening, but I got a water flosser pick thingy to make me more likely to floss daily (I hate it when my gums bleed). It's like a power washer and gum massage all in one. Huge fan.

This is what I use, amazing! My gums bleed all of the time now, id hate to ram floss up in there
I had this while I was pregnant with my dd. I got an electric toothbrush, medicated mouthwash and flossed a lot. I also had cleaning every 6-8 weeks. The condition resolved itself after her birth luckily so I didn't need any further intervention.
I am hoping to avoid it all together this pregnancy!
I had my regular cleaning the day after I found out I was pregnant and they told me to expect more bleeding gums. They said I should floss more anyways, but that it would likely still happen no matter what.
I had a scaling done (really deep cleaning) before we started trying and was good for a while. Now my gums are bleeding again. I also have a water pik and need to start using it more often.
I had this too. I was feeling embarrassed when the hygienist was telling me about the gum disease being mild. She assured me it was pregnancy related and would go away after baby. She recommended using mouthwash more regularly to help with it.
My insurance has a special nurse line that sends you information and they call and check on me monthly. I talked to her last week and she advised me to go in for a cleaning. Its apparently common with hormone changes and increased blood to have issues with your gums.
ok, just a little update. i have been diligently flossing the past month and i have noticed a difference. no more bleeding! obviously i am not a dentist so i have no idea if my gums are better, but the no bleeding is very encouraging. i really think this will go away after pregnancy. get your teeth cleaned and keep flossing!
This thread totally makes me want to cancel my dentist appointment in a few weeks!
This!!! Eeeekkk!!!
Me too!!! I just started having a sensitive tooth too... I'm really scared now!!!
Don't worry too much- I went this morning. It went as normal, she was more gentle I think though. No excessive bleeding, no cavities or other oral health issues. You should be fine! I was nervous because I have felt like my mouth has been just nasty these past few months. But they said everything looked great!
