Baby peeing through diaper every night...

James is in size 3 diapers during the day & I recently switched to size 5 at night and he is still peeling out of them. He's only been waking up once so the kid must be a pee machine.

I've also tried baby dry and he soaked through them.

Any other recs for a nightime diaper? He actually could care less; I have to wash jammies & sleep sacks constantly.

Eta they are pampers swaddlers

Re: Baby peeing through diaper every night...

  • would a size 4 fit him better? my 2.5 year old (30 lbs) is in size 5.  Just a thought! We do use baby dry at night and haven't had any issues, so I don't have a better brand recommendation for you, sorry!

We moved up from size 4 at night because he was peeing through :(
  • There's those doubler things that @primrosemama posted about.

    That's right! Thank you!
  • Would you consider cloth for ON?

When we started cloth, I was kind of planning on using sposies at night, but he pees so much at night that was a joke. It took a little while to find the cloth solution that worked for him,( because of a wetness sensitivity) but so worth it.

  • @primrosemama, do you have a brand you recommend for diaper doubler?
  • I would try a different brand. A pees through every huggie diaper. He has never leaked in Pampers or Up and Ups. He is in the size 3s for day and night.
  • Thank you for all of the suggestions! Like I said, he doesn't even care... But I don't want him to get a rash and I have a lot of laundry to do (we only have 3 sleep sacks).

What's your overnight cloth solution? I've just about given up on Luke not soaking through every night since he's hooked up to the IV at a high rate overnight, but I'm always interested in potential fixes, especially since we've made it through the last couple nights without an overnight poo (!!!!). We're currently using BG AIO with an extra insert in between the flaps.

We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • We use Huggies size 3 overnights (Ben weighs 17lbs and some nights would leak through the regular size 3a). Size 4 or 5 might be too big on his legs, thus leaking. Just a thought.
Trying for #2 since November 2015

  • We also use Huggies overnights.  She was leaking through regular diapers but so far these have been great.

We use Kawaii GoodNight Heavy Wetter with two Joey-bunz premium hemp inserts and a Microfiber insert. It is super bulky, and not 100% leak free, but about 98%. I am satisfied with that because it is comparatively inexpensive and so much better than before. (GNHW are less than $10)
I have always wanted to try a really good fitted for night, but if he has wet natural fibers against his skin for more than an hour or two he breaks out. The good ON stay- dry fitteds are hard to find and very pricy.

  • We use Pampers Extra Protection for overnights. I still have to change once a night, but we are still at 3 MOTN feedings.

  • When I hit size 4 with ds1 huggies just started leaking all the time. I switched to Luvs and he leaks much less.
  • We are also cloth users. I use BumGenius 4.0's with an AMP hemp booster added. Whenever I've used disposables overnight, he's leaked.

Maybe we will head to target & try these. Do you get a bigger size than what he/she wears during the day? Mine was leaking out of 3s and then I tried 4s, which worked for a while. Now 5s are leaking, too :(.

You could also try Pampers Cruisers. Muppet peed through the Swaddlers and the Baby Drys but not once has he peed through a Cruiser.

Did you get a larger size? Or the size he typically wears?
  • We CD. I use Kawaii HD2s over night, double stuffed. No leaks.

because it didn't fucking snow enough for me to build my own
  • We use Huggies snug & dry size 3 (same size he wears during the day). Just make sure you pull the diaper high enough in the front & pull the tabs really tight. He's never leaked.
  • I second trying a cloth diaper if you can't find a disposable that works. I use a fitted with a cover or a microfiber insert sandwiched in a hemp prefold. I don't have a heavy wetter though.

    Maybe a cruiser would work.

  • We use Huggies Snug and Dry.  Knock on wood, we've never had a pee leak.
  • I would guess he will leak out of fives because they are too big - that can cause leaking around legs. Smaller sometimes does better because of fit.

I would make sure penis is pointed down, make sure diaper is tight and the leg gasket things are pulled out Correctly. You could add a cloth doubler or try cloth diapering at night - my son was a super pee baby and I had to like triple layer a BG with one layer being hemp or something more absorbent.

    Just chiming in re: CD.

If you do end up wanting to give it a try, we use a fitted diaper with 2 hemp inserts (one inside the fitted, one outside under the wool cover), with a wool cover on topp.

I'll snap a pic tonight - it's def. fluffy bum but he's never leaked through, ever (thus far...).

The specific diapers we use are:
    - fitted: Mother-ease Sandy's in Bamboo/Cotton (https://www.mother-ease.com/cloth-diapers/SandysDiapers)
    - inserts: I bought generic hemp/cotton inserts on aliexpress but something similar would be these from GMD https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/hemp-doublers.html)
    - wool cover: I use a LoveyBums wool interlock cover. They aren't cheap but are really well made and very easy to care for. But there are other covers around you can find cheaper. https://www.loveybums.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=37

K here are a couple pics in case you're interested in our nighttime solution I mentioned above. Before baby application, and après baby application.
  • If you don't want to do the entire CD route, maybe try buying covers (Thirsties, Flip, bummis) and put it over the disposible at night to keep it all in.

This will only work with pretty small leaks. If there isn't enough absorption, you are going to have leaks, period. No diaper or cover creates a waterproof seal, so with any big leak what you need is more absorption.

  • Grey does too.  I've finally given up and started using puppy pee pads under him.
