Toddlers saying "mine"?

Riley recently started yelling "mine" and holding things to her chest. For example while brushing her teeth this morning, she decided she wasn't done so she yelled "MIIIIIIINE" and rocked back and forth with a death grip on the toothbrush. Anyone else have a kid saying this word? If so, how are you reacting?

  • Cooper has been at this lovely little act for about a month now. It drives me nuts. She will grab something put of my hand and say mine and run away. I have to explain that it's not hers and we have to share. So frustrating. I can only imagine what she's like at school. Miss bossy territorial thang

Yup, it's going on in our house too.  It's a lot of fun when the dog's toys are "mine."  The tug-of-war that ensues is pretty fun to watch. :)

ETA: I'll also add that we don't let the "mine" behavior stop us from showing him what's really his.  If it's a phone, toy, iPad, etc., we take it away and tell him it's mommy's, daddy's or Jenna's and explain he has to ask nicely.  I finally got him to say "please" when he wants something that belongs to somebody yesterday, but I have a feeling that was a fleeting moment.

I honestly don't think MH or I have ever used the word "mine" in front of K. If he learns it, it will have to be from the kids at daycare. He doesn't say it currently, but that doesn't mean he doesn't think it! Heaven forbid we take anything away from him.

  • @stokedwifey When my MIL visited, she would literally snatch things from K and say "mine" all nasty like as if she was trying to teach him to copy her. I told her we don't want him learning that behavior so she stopped (or at least stopped doing it in front of me....), but seriously?? Who would try to teach a toddler that or do that to a toddler??? My MIL that's who, apparently.

@lewispm - OMG seriously, your MIL has to know better, right?! Apparently not. That is so not cool!

  • Thanks for the responses, ladies - seriously I feel better knowing I'm not alone on this one. I'm just shocked how angry she sounds when she yells MINE. Angry little baby!

  • She doesn't have the word "mine" yet, but I'm pretty certain I'd be getting it too. Like with the toothbrush, she'll only give it up nicely to her father. And I don't want her wandering around the house rubbing it all over who knows what (ew!), so I end up wrestling it from her grasp. And it ends up with a RMTiC, unless she's willing to be distracted at that point.

I don't believe you.  That sweet little face is totally innocent and could never sound anything less than angelic.

    Well, my comment got erased.

We never said it either, but Bryson still picked it up.  Those darn daycare kids are bad influences.
Yes! We never say the word no in our house. LO must have picked that word up at DC because she shouts no at us all the time.

Well, she said the F bomb the other day when she dropped her camera while skyping with K. I assume she just doesn't know better sometimes...LOL

You don't say no??? What do you say then? Sorry genuinely curious.
  • Taylor doesn't say 'mine' but she sure throws a tantrum if you take something away that she really wants. @cpasley we have the same issue with the toothbrush. Every time I leave the bathroom door open she goes in there and reaches up to the counter whining going, "tee?" (teeth). Really all she wants to do is suck the berry flavored toothpaste off. It has nothing to do with her wanting to be hygenic. And god forbid I try to take it away.

@RTaylor12 We say phrases like "We do not play with X, it is for cooking/work/seeing etc."  LO loves to grab our glasses right now so instead of saying no we tell her they are not toys. She does not get it at this age but we do not want to shout no at her all the time. We will use the word no eventually and for serious situations but we do not use no in our daily vocab.
For things like the stove, instead of saying no if she tries to touch it we tell her it is hot. Sometimes I wonder if she will confuse the words and think a stove is called hot but it works for right now.
