WWYD: Do I take my pump to SB? or not?

I'm trying to decide if I should take my pump with me into the Super Bowl this weekend. From what I've gathered online there *may* be two places I could pump at the game. Either a family restroom or the first aid tent. Neither are ideal but we're going to be gone A LONG time... probably at least 12 hours, maybe longer. I tend to produce less and get less engorged in the afternoons (we aren't leaving home until 12:30pm). But I also had a nasty bout of plugged ducts just three weeks ago and I would hate to create a reoccurance. I'm also on antibiotics and Mucinex, which is creating a dip in my supply, however I dont want to tell my body to down regulate by not pumping at all for 12 hours.
What would you do?

  • Do you have a manual pump? It'd be easier to take...but I definitely would if you're dealing with supply issues already...

  • I have a manual hand held for such situations. Do you have a small insulated lunch kit? I would pump every few hrs for about 10 mins, save whatever I have in the lunch kit. I wouldn't want to lug a huge electric pump around.

Not sure if you can bring freezer packs, there's weird restrictions now. So if you can't, just bring a ziplock bag and ask the concession people to fill it w ice to put in the lunch kit
  • What kind of pump do you have? I'd probably just invest in a little handheld manual one to bring along and pump just about anywhere.
    Still jealous you're actually going.

  • I was going to suggest a manual pump as well.

I was thinking I could buy a manual but was worried it would take forever. With my electric pump I can get it done in 10-15 minutes. How long do the manuals take?

I wont be saving my milk as I'll be drinking and I'll be taking enough frozen to last two days - Sunday at the game and Monday while we're out sight seeing. My IL's live in Manhattan so they'll have him during the days.
ETA: is one brand of manual better than another? Thank you!

  • I would also take a manual. I can generally pump 4 ounces in less than 10 minutes at night when I haven't nursed in 4-6 hours so it doesn't take long. I would just take it to make sure your body doesn't take that as a sign to produce less.

  • I would probably pump in the car before going into the stadium. I wouldn't lug my electric pump around, but would probably bring my manual in to use if needed. You could get away with storing milk in a bag, because it will be pretty chilly. Have an awesome time! So jealous.
  • I would definitely pump!

  • I guess you can add me to the list of posters who had bitch flakes for breakfast, but really? Common sense would say that yes, you need to pump, ESPECIALLY if you're having supply issues. Would you go all day at work without pumping?

  • I'm team manual pump as well. It doesn't take long once you have the hang if it. Try it out a few times before that day so you can be efficient & back to the excitement in no time.
    Have fun!!
  • @WildRumpus - ha! Love the term bitchflakes. Unfortunately its not quite as easy as determining whether or not I *want* to pump. I didnt go into all the laborious details in my OP but anyone who follows NFL or SB would know that you can only take in a 12x6x12 CLEAR plastic bag. I can fit my Medela in it, but its stored in an opaque bag. If they were to stop me and not let it through.... there goes a $300 pump. I also dont have the luxury of going to a private place or even to a car since you can't drive a car within miles of the stadium.
Many of the other ladies on here who know me also know that I've had issues with an oversupply. This new supply issue is most likely caused by the Mucinex and antibiotics.
Of course I want to pump and dont want to risk messing with my supply. But its not as simple as making a choice of whether or not to pump. Thankfully I got some great feedback on the manual pump, went out and bought one and am going to give it a whirl right now.

  • This is coming from the lady who pumped in her seat on an airplane when we couldn't leave our seats and at a university restroom with students coming in and out; pump with whatever pump you can and a nursing cover wherever and whenever you need to. Pumping in public is almost never as bad as you think it will be. Also, worst comes to worse, hand expression into a towel can get you through in a pinch. (Pun intended :-)).

  • I've manually pumped in restaurant bathrooms a few times...you should be able to do that right? Who cares if you hog a stall for a bit...and since it'll be cold, the warm bathroom will be a nice respite!
  • Thank you to all the mamas on here who recommended the manual pump. I was able to pump in a stall and I was surprised at how well it worked!!
