Anybody else splurge on professional cleaning?

I think this may have been posted before, but I could not locate an earlier thread on this topic. My apologies if this topic has been previously discussed.
I'm thinking if paying to get our 1000 sq foot house cleaned. It's just so overwhelming. I am hoping that scheduling this will also force me to further organize things in preparation for the cleaning crew. A sort of forced cleaning prior to the cleaning

I have been quoted $80 an hour for two women and told it will take a couple hours (160)

Has anyone had this done? Was it worth it?

Re: Anybody else splurge on professional cleaning?

  • I have mine scheduled for this Friday (2 wks before due date) and if we are happy will plan to have it continue every other work for the next 2-3 months. I'm having one person come for 3 hours. Prices are hard to compare on here because we all live in such different areas.

  • All I did with DS was have the carpets cleaned professionally. We had 2 dogs that shed aLOT and loved rolling in dirt RIGHT before they came inside. They could of been out for an hour and just played but as soon as they saw me let them in, they would go straight to their self made dirt pad and roll all in it..
We just moved into a new house a couple months ago and remarkably the floors are still pretty good shape. Although when LO starts crawling I'll have them done
  • I wouldn't say I splurged, but I did have a few rooms' carpets cleaned on Friday.  As PP mentioned, I will have them cleaned again before crawling starts.  Luckily the place I went with has a deal, if you get the same areas cleaned within 6 months it's half off.

  • Where are you? That seems high. My BFF just paid $130 for my two story 2400sqft.

Yeah we have all wood but I have a dog who sheds everywhere. It's disgusting. Maybe I should splurge On getting him furminated/ some deshedding treatment instead
  • That sounds like a good price for a first cleaning for sure!  I have someone come every week and I pay her $250 a month.  She spends about 6 hours at my (2 bedroom, 2 bathroom) apartment each time.

    Atlanta it was Molly maid.
  • I have a regular cleaning lady who comes every 2 weeks to clean our 3 bed 2 bath home. A couple times a year, I pay her double for a "deep clean" when she tackles baseboards, fridge, vents, cabinets, etc. I love it! Was going to have to give her up for maternity leave but DH got enough of a raise that I don't have to!

  • I have a lady that cleans our house when needed. We had her come twice before DS2 was born. She charges $15 an hour and it takes 5 hours to clean our house.

It is totally worth it IMO. It does force us to organize/put things away before she comes so that she can focus on deep cleaning.

I am having this done Friday too! Dog goes to groomers and gets as much deshedding treatment as possible, while house cleaners come here to clean what I haven't been able to for weeks!

I had a lady come out to clean last week. She charged $18/hr for four hours ($72). Molly Maids quoted me$160/1hr and they would send 4 people. That was crazy high to me, especially considering my house is so small (900sq ft).

This may be what I do too. Regular brushing just isn't cutting it at this point and it seems silly to spend money on professional cleaners if he is just going to shed the minute they leave

Where did you find her? I think Molly maids is crazy expensive too and I have a suspicion that the people who clean only get a pretty small fraction of that money. I'd rather get someone direct and tip well

Anita's Housecleaning. They are a referral service, I believe. Dana's Housecleaning is the same, if you have them in your area.
  • We have a woman come every Wednesday. She stays for 4 hours and charges $60. Best thing I could have done. I still have to straighten the house and clean the kitchen after cooking and do laundry but that's really it. And she would do the laundry if I paid her to lol.

    Thanks!
  • I have someone that comes every other week. It's the best spent money since I don't have to spend my weekends scrubbing toilets or dusting.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

Try checking out Groupon or Living Social...my mom purchased a 3 hour cleaning session for me for a pretty good price.
  • We're having someone come to give a good cleaning pre-baby. After that, I'll see if I can keep on top of it myself...but if not, we may start having someone come every other week just to keep things from getting too nasty!

  • We have 2 women come every two weeks. We're in a HCOL area and pay $95 for a 4 bed/2.5 bath house. We just started doing it a few months ago, but the quotes I got were more dependent on number of beds and baths than on square footage. I had carpet cleaners scheduled to come the day I had DS. I gave birth at 9:08 am and called them to cancel at 9:45 am because they were scheduled to be at my house at 10 :)

  • I use eco-friendly maid service in Atlanta.  The price is based on how often they come and it's not that cheap, but it's less than Molly Maids.
  • We're having the place deep cleaned on Thursday. We're paying more than that, but my parents are paying for half as a Christmas gift, and we're having about 1700sqft cleaned. It also includes windows, inside all appliances, ect... with no time limit, so I still feel like it's not a bad deal.

I'm hoping the house will look so fab that I can convince MH to keep her on every other week or once a month... fingers crossed!

  • I did! I had our house done last Wednesday and it was $20 an hour. So it costed $60 dollars and was worth every penny!!

  • I have had a cleaning service the past few years and switched last fall to someone who does it on their own. It was more expensive for the service ($85/bi-weekly) than my new lady ($60/bi-weekly). But the cleaning service did a better job overall. Either way I'm happy after they clean my house!!! Def worth the $$ IMO esp with little ones.

  • Just to report back...I ended up hiring a very nice woman to help . There is a huge difference in prices between these services (merry maids, molly maid, etc) and individuals. I went on my community facebook page and asked for references and people had plenty. I can't say for sure if this woman will do a decent job, but she came with glowing recommendations from neighbors. I would much rather pay her directly and tip well then to pay a service who will pocket most of the money. Anyway, any other ladies thinking of doing this should definitely ask around for names from their neighbors/on neighborhood web pages. That seems to be a good place to look
  • Do whatever makes your life easier. We just hired a cleaning co, they come once a month. I do some small stuff during the off weeks so our bathrooms don't get nasty, but it's so worth them coming. It saves my husband and I from arguing about who does what around the house versus what we want o do with hour free time. Plus it will be a Godsend once baby is here. It's almost $150/month for my 1900 sq ft house, but so worth it. I may even give up premium cable in order to keep it.

stupid question: how does a dog get salt on floors? They don't sweat like we do, right? I mean, they cool off through their tongues. Does your dog do something that results in salt getting on your floors? Not trying to be snarky, just genuinely curious.

I wondered this too. But then I figured it was something snow/cold weather related? I'm from San Diego, so I could be wrong.
