Negotiating a Job Offer for Flex Time

I am in the process of negotiating a job offer. I love my current job because of the flexibility. My industry can have long hours and I am always out the door by 6 p.m. My problem is that my company is not doing very well and because of this, I really need to find a new job. I finally have a good job offer money-wise, but would really like a work from home one day a week, because I know I will have longer hours with this new company. It is very important to me. It is fairly typical in this new company for parents to work one day from home and it was brought up to my several times in my interviews. Is this something I bring up before signing my offer letter, or do I bring it up with my manager when I start.

Re: Negotiating a Job Offer for Flex Time

  • Would you take the offer if you couldn't work from home? If yes, bring it up after you start. If no, bring it up to your new manager before you sign the offer. Also, I'd expect to spend at least the first month or two not working from home while you get used to the workplace. And I hope working from home is available to everyone, not just parents (other people need flexibility too).

  • I don't know if this is the norm but at my company you have to be here a minimum of 6 months (in good standing) before you can take advantage of flex time.  They want to make sure you're integrating well and making yourself part of the team.  If you know you'll take the job even if flex isn't an option, wait until you've started and ask what the policy is for requesting flex time.  If it's a deal breaker, approach it like "During my interviews several people mentioned flex time and that's something I'd definitely be interested in discussing.  Can you share with me how that's managed?" and let the conversation go from there.
