Vomiting

Avery us 4 weeks old and has always had an issue with spitting up. Our pediatrician was not concerned bc she is gaining weight and shows no signs of dehydration, she also has multiple wet and dirty diapers daily. I'm not sure if it's due to a growth spurt, but the past 2 days she wants to breastfeed more frequently. Yesterday I fed her for 30 minutes and she was still rooting so I had DH give her the bottle if breast milk from the fridge, maybe 10 minutes after that bottle, she vomited 3 times in a row. It looked like a waterfall pouring out if her mouth and it was a very good amount. She just did it for me again. We've been up since 1130pm and it is now 245. I haven't gotten to sleep bc she keeps giving hunger cues and feeds. Then she vomited x1. She doesn't seem to be in any distress after eating or after she vomits. We've also checked her temp rectally and it was 98.1F. I'm going to call the pediatrician tomorrow but was curious if any of you are or we're going through something similar

Re: Vomiting

  • My LO roots and acts like she is hungry when she is feeling uncomfortable. I think when her belly is bothering her she wants to comfort nurse. If I have just fed her and she is still rooting I wait till I get a couple of burps out of her first and often time she stops acting like she's still hungry. I realized this and that if I just continued to feed her she would spit A ton of it up. Maybe this could be the case with your lo?

  • Sound like my LO. She spits up a lot (an hour ago she projectile vomitted on me abd wanted to eat afterwards lol) I think the minor mistake was giving the bottle after feeding which caused her to spit up a lot. Did you burp in between breast and bottle? The bottle goes down a lot quicker vs the breast and she could have inhaled a lot of air too. Sometimes after a feeding and my DD is rooting for more, I try to burp her and keep her inclined and wait 15 to 30 mins to feed her again. Breast milk digest way faster so it doesn't bother me much if she wants to eat again.

  • This ^^

Sometimes (mostly at night) DS will cluster feed or comfort nurse where it feels like I am constantly just switching sides. Sometimes he'll latch and suck for a few min and then just hold my breast in his mouth...other times he'll latch and just comfort suck vs the suck/swallow when he's truly eating.

When they suck on a bottle milk comes out much quicker and easier so your babe could have easily over eaten causing her to throw up. Generally b-fed babies (especially this young) are just fed on demand or out to the breast on demand until they kids of make their own routine. Maybe try holding off on the bottle for now snd just keep nursing even when it seems like baby shouldn't be hungry.

  • I'm so glad I decided to log on and read this. DS2 (5wks) just projectile vomited a ton, and he's had the same vomiting where it just pours out of his mouth. I was thinking reflux? But it makes me feel better knowing that he's not the only one doing this.

  • I think it may have been to overfeeding. LO seems fine and dandy now and we haven't had another episode!
  • DD spits up constantly. It's disheartening bc I know she will be hungry sooner than later. It's like she spits up her entire stomach contents after every feed. I go thru so many burp cloths a day. I use one per feed. I'm sure it is reflux.

That was my thought when I read your post. Will LO take a paci? Sounds like lo needs comfort sucking. My sil said my niece would eat and eat then throw up because of being too full. Once she finally would take a paci she stopped it.

  • My DS (6w5d) spits up A TON! And I feel like it's gotten worse. He hasn't really projectile vomited across the room, but he spits up after every feed, before burping, during burping, an hour after he eats, etc. I had addressed this with his pedi about a month ago and he said at that point it could be from an immature system, dairy allergy, or reflux. I have cut all obvious dairy out if my diet and haven't seen much difference. I keep going back and forth in my head thinking it's just normal newborn behavior to thinking there has got to be a solution. My DH thinks it's completely normal. Either way I made an appt with the pedi for tomorrow just to get his opinion again. I'll let you know what the pedi says.

  • The dr said it is all totally normal! He's gaining well and not fussy or crying all the time. On a side note I swear the spit up got better from the second I called to make an appointment. :)
