Texas Babies

Moving to San Antonio

Hi all,
My husband and I are moving to San Antonio  from Alaska about mid December. I'm currently receiving my prenatal care from a group of nurse midwives and want to continue with  a CNM when we get down to SA. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about lonestar midwives? They birth at St. Luke's which I'm kinda disappointed about since I was looking forward to birthing in a more intimate setting at a center.
My husband's new job is a few minutes away from Lackland AFB so we're thinking a area to live in North or Northwest San Antonio. Since we're doing such a big move in a short amount of time we'll probably have to rent initially, but would like to buy asap. Are there any areas that you absolutely love? What about areas that you'd stay around from?
Quick bit about me: I'm a 26 year old first time mama, expecting a little girl the first week of March. I'm also a teacher, but this year I'm subbing. I have no clue how the job market is for teachers in SA, but I'm also not too worried about it since I'm considering taking next year off anyways to be with baby.

Re: Moving to San Antonio

  • The Lonestar midwives, I hear are great. I've had a few friends use them and all were happy with them. If you want a birth center there's the San Antonio birth center and one in stone oak. The San Antonio birth center is in the medical center and probably would be closer to you than the stone oak one.

As for school districts Neisd, Alamo heights isd and north side isd are pretty desirable districts to teach in. There are a lot of districts in the area. I would figure out where you wanted to live and then see which districts are close to you.

  • Yay someone finally replied thank you so much for taking the time to write a reply! Thanks for the quick over view on school districts. We only have two main school districts in my area so moving to a large city like San Antonio is very overwhelming. I've done further research and think I might go with the Austin Area Birthing Center since it's very similar to my current birthing center. I realize it's like an hour and a half away, but that's about how long it takes to get to my current birthing center  from my house. I'm headed down to Texas this week for a house hunting trip and will actually time the drive out and make a decision. Otherwise I'm think the San Antonio birth center will be closer so I plan to tour it and the one in Austin this week.
    Thanks again for your reply.
  • Traffic up to Austin can get pretty bad. Also I believe 35 is under construction which if you go that way it'll take longer. I've only driven up a handful of times due to the length of the drive. I'm not sure I'd want to drive that distance every week at the end of my pregnancy and definitely not while in labor. To be fair my last labor was super fast and my 30 minute drive to the hospital was torture since I was trying to not push the whole way. If I had to drive to Austin she would have been born in the car.

If you're not happy with the two in town there's a birthing center in New Braunfels which is closer than Austin. There are also lots of home birth midwives in town, that would be my personal preference if I were to have a third.
  • Thanks for the advice Kami. I ended up going with Lone Star Midwives out of St. Lukes, all the birthing centers were full during Feb and March. Must be fate that ended with these ladies since they were actually my first option until I saw the birthing rooms a St. Lukes (yuck, at least the pictures online were not appealing) I've only had one appointment with them other than my initial interview, so far I like it and feel like it's a good fit, not that I can be picky with only 7 weeks or so to go. haha
  • I had both my babies at St. Luke's with one of the Lonestar OBs. My first birth was fantastic, the second sucked but to be fair I walked into the ER pushing and DD was born 30 minutes later. They weren't able to find my chart and it was just Chaos but it was an unusual situation. The birthing rooms are nice in my opinion but they only have showers in them. If you have a doula St. Luke's does allow you to bring in a birthing pool but I'm not sure on the protocols and rules since we didn't do it. The recovery rooms aren't the nicest but they're fine. I liked all the post partum nurses I had with both babies. Their LCs are great, one of them gave me her personal number and talked me through getting my first back to breast on Easter Sunday after we'd been told to only bottle feed by a (stupid) doctor due to jaundice.

St. Luke's has birthing balls and squat bars if you want them. Just make sure you know the bar angles away from you for set up. The nurse with my first wasn't sure and I had to correct her.

If I was to have a third and it wasn't so far from my house, I'd go there again. Since there are two hospitals much closer too me if we have a third I'll be looking at them or a home birth since I my last was a precipitous birth.
  • Just stumbled across this. I'm also new to San Antonio and we chose to live up in the stone oak area. I am also a teacher and was able to get a job within 2 months of moving here with NISD, but it's a bit of a commute from where we live. From my research, NISD and NEISD are the best districts. Teachers seem to shuffle around a lot here so if you wanted to work you should be able to find something. I am thinking I will take next year off.
I am due in August and not crazy about my current OB but am having the hardest time finding one I really love!
  • Yes, it definitely seems easier to get a job here than in the Anchorage/ Mat-su area in Alaska. I'm doing a case study for my grad courses and the principal at one of the schools is already hinting that she wants me on her staff next year with the NISD.( I'm guessing because I'm getting certified in ESL) Right now, I don't see the point in working since I'm getting so close to my due date, but next year I definitely plan on getting a job.
So far I like the ladies at Lonestar Midwives they also work with OBs that are I think a part of the same practice.Of course I'm not sure what the drive is like from Stone Oaks. I've only ventured over there a few times and by accident. haha
Thanks for the school district info.
  • I actually live a bit east of Stone Oak and delivered both of my babies in the Medical Center with Lonestar OB/Gyn. It's about a 30 minute drive from the Stone Oak area. I love Dr. Jacobs and I've heard great things about Dr. Kuhl.
