Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Remember when...

This is just for shits and giggles so let's not get too serious. I was remembering when I was 9 and had a one soda a day rule. And when I was 7 my mom used to let me go fishing alone, at dawn before she was awake.

What things do you look back on and go "oh my goodness never would I ever"?

Re: Remember when...

  • My grandmother by the time I was 5 would let me go about 2 blocks away to the elementary school by her house to play on the playground by myself. In a not-so-great part of town. Her only instructions were that if big kids were there, I couldn't stay and needed to come home. Somehow even at that age, I knew not to tell my parents she let me do that!

  • We used to ride in the trunk of our SUV for 10 miles from my grandma back to our house! (not a closed trunk, not sure how to describe it)

My mom would let me run the block until the street lights came on.

We did the same thing. I remember sitting on the back floor of the GMC Jimmy when all the seats were taken. My parents always made sure the younger cousins were in seat belts. It was usually when we went to a parade or fire works or another event where parking was limited. Or riding to town in the bed of the pickup. This might be a "yes I would do that" but that is because our area is very rural and we didn't do that until we were older.

  • I remember laying in the back window of the car while my parents drove around.  Before seatbelt laws!!
  • I still can't believe that I was allowed to babysit three children ages three to seven that were not family when I was twelve. Unreal.

  • I used to walk to the store, post office, gas station and school starting around 5 or 6. I was always a do my own thing girl, but I shudder when I think of the dangerous situations I got myself into.
We used to drink pop all the time and koolaid! Mmm....

  • Ditto to the going all over the place unsupervised from an early age and babysitting other people's children at a young age. I was either 12 or 13 and watching a three month old baby. I had no idea what I was doing and had to call my mom and ask her what to do.

  • I was babysitting at about 11 and my parents had no trouble with me riding my bike home in the dark late at night. I would never.........!!!!

  • My parents would let me sleep over at friends houses and they didn't even know the parents. I just can't imagine doing that. I don't trust people.

  • When I was really little my sister and I would play on the floor of the van when we would drive to my grandparent's house (16 hour ride).

In elementary school I would ride my bike all over the neighborhood for hours until dark.
  • I remember when I was five, the rule was that if I wanted to go to the park with a friend, I would tell my parents.  One time we went to the park and we decided to just go without telling our parents.  They never even noticed.

I also remember going for a bike ground around the campground once when we went camping.  I got lost and couldn't find the campsite.  When I finally found it again I thought my parents would be worried, but they didn't even notice.

So apparently your child disappearing for an hour wasn't a big deal in my house.

Yeah, I was a bit older but at 15 I was babysitting for a family in my neighborhood that had 3 children under 10- when I think back to that I cannot believe they left their kids with me. Not because I was irresponsible or anything but had there been an emergency I would've had no idea how to handle it other than call 911.
  • Both of mine are car related.  When we took overnight trips to see family (we lived in GA, family in MD) my parents would take the middle row of seats out of the minivan and lay a big piece of foam down complete with sheets and blankets.  We'd sleep on the floor while they drove overnight (when we woke up we had to sit on the back row seats with our seat belts).

My parents would also let us "drive" home from the grocery store by sitting on their laps.
  • When we got home from school, we went out to play with our friends in the neighborhood...as long as we were home for dinner, we were free to roam wherever in the neighborhood we wanted.

  • I remember when my cousins would sleep over our house and my parents would cram like 5 or 6 kids in the back of the car and shove like 2 or 3 kids in 1 seatbelt.  And these were the lap belts that the cars used to have.

  • We used to drive to Mexico when I was little (48 hours to my dad's town from Chicago) and for some of the trip my brother and I were allowed to lay down on the floor stretched out with blankets with no seat belts obviously.

That's about all I got, my parents were crazy strict when I was younger.
  • When I was maybe...6 ish? I would ride in the middle of the front bench seat in my grandparents car all of the time.

My sister and I always rode in the trunk of the jeep when we were little....it was way more fun than riding in the backseat haha.

I babysat for 2 families from the time I was 13 to like 17. Both had 3 kids maybe like...newborn to 5 years old. I was a responsible teenager but looking back I think 'what the heck was I doing?'. I seriously had no clue what I was doing!! But everyone turned out OK so I guess I was doing something right :P
  • This is not mine but my best friend told me that not only did she and her brother used to ride around with her dad and uncle unbelted in the car but that since she was the oldest it was her job to pass the men beers from the cooler in the middle!!!!  Insane!!!
