Angel care, Snuza etc Monitor

I am overly paranoid and will admit that from the get go. With one preemie twin discharged, I didn't get much sleep at all. She has had a few choking episodes thankfully while awake. The other twin is now having bradys and desating a lot again. I know...setbacks are normal. To ease my mind a little bit I am highly considering getting a breathing monitor of some sort. Do you have one? What do you use? Pros and cons? Would you recommend it?

Re: Angel care, Snuza etc Monitor

  • I am a FTM and paranoid about SIDS and my baby's still on the inside. I can only imagine that, in your situation, I would be a wreck. I've been going back and forth on what monitor to get (Snuza or Angelcare) for a while and hope someone weighs in.

On one hand the Snuza is nice because it seems a little more portable. Our LO will most likely be sleeping in our room in a pack n play for a while but we may put her down for naps in her crib - so the Snuza could go everywhere easily. Angelcare has good reviews though. I'm stuck and want someone to make the decision for me.

  • We had an angle care with DS but never used it because he was in our bed. Now that I'm hoping to sidecar a crib I will use the angle care and I got a snuza. It's completely ok to be paranoid. I still am with DS who's almost 2.5.

  • With my 32 weeker we were sent home with a hospital rental pulse ox. That was 10&1/2 years ago so idk if they still do that or not. It was just like the one that he had in the nicu just a little smaller. It was still a big heavy thing though, but if it went off it was LOUD and there was no sleeping through it!
  • I asked the cardiologists about taking home a pulse ox and they said if we needed it we weren't leaving the PCICU. I don't think they realized that my peace of mind needs it. Yikes.
  • @FarmBoysWife Thank you for your kind words and hugs! It really means a lot to know that I am not crazy....well I still might be! ;)

    @theluckiest9 I completely agree!

@snow527 and @ProudMommy030614 We were told we would only be sent home with a monitor if our little guy went home on caffeine and he is off of it and doing well. Therefore, no monitors being sent home with us!!!

@htn1763 Thank you for letting me know still what you picked!

@aLsMay24 What is the benefit of having both of them? Just curious! I am glad to know I am not alone in this world of being paranoid!!!

@babylimas Wow! That is crazy but I also understand! We won't be sent home with monitors.

@babycaps I totally understand they false alarm! Being in the NICU I have learned to realize what is a false alarm and what isn't.

When I was little my next door neighbors were preemie twins. I remember they were sent home with some type of apnea monitoring. It was at least a pulse oximeter which would go off if they desaturated. Maybe you could speak to the pedi and ask if you can rent something through the hospital? That was many years ago, too!
This, me, my sister, and my dad were all "near miss sids" according to my mom, we had to be revived i guess and both of my sister's children went home with an apnea monitor

  • I used an Angel Care (just stopped using it a couple of weeks ago for my 16mo old). I started using it when she went in to the crib (before that she was in my room or in my bed). She could roll back to belly but not belly to back and I was getting zero sleep worrying that she wouldn't be able to roll back over if needed, then it just became great peace of mind. The only thing with it is that you're almost certainly going to get some false alarms. For me it was never a big deal (though it will get you wide awake and running in the MOTN)--there was never any question that she was fine after I got to her. You have to work to get the right sensitivity and we had to put down a board across the full bottom of the crib and then we were just fine. I will absolutely use it with this baby, too.

  • We have both is the only reason. The snuza is portable so no matter where they sleep you can use it. I will put the angel care in the nursery crib now that I think about it and just use the snuza everywhere else. I'm more paranoid this time since I will have DS to also watch and I'm staying home now.

  • My first was born at 29 weeks and when he came home after 5 weeks of growth in the NICU he had a apnea monitor. He wore it all the time for a couple months after he came home. You might ask about it and see if your little ones will be coming home with one of these.
  • We got a Snuza from MIL as a shower gift. I didn't know what it was at first but after reading a ton of reviews it's supposed to be great. One woman posted a review saying her previous child passed and it was the only thing that gave her peace of mind with her second child. I'm a FTM so I really can't say yet, but I'm excited about it.
  • I appreciate the responses and feedback VERY much! After furthering digging and researching we will be going with the Snuza Hero!

    Thank you for your help!!!
