We hired a company to come install and drill baby gates into the wall at the top and bottom of staircases (or you could do it, if you or your H is handy). I consider it a great investment and they are much more sturdy than the expandable gates (which we use between rooms but not on staircases).
We have this one at the bottom of the stairs and it's super easy/works great, but like @chicagobroad26 said, I wouldn't use it at the top of the stairs.
Whatever you get, you need to make sure the one at the top of the stairs is drilled in and meant to be a stairs gate. You can't just put any old gate at the top of the stairs, and definitely not a pressure gate.

Thanks girls!
We're definitely not handy so we'll look into getting professionals to come get it done.
