Come in and whine about oversupply

I've seen a lot of comments here and there about it.. How many of us are dealing with this? What are you doing? Need to vent?

6 weeks tomorrow and I'm in tears over BFing for the first time since week 1.

I've been battling over supply from the beginning and was struggling along (leaned back feeds, so much choking that breaks my heart, fussy baby, horribly gassy baby).... Then he got his growth spurt, was at the boob constantly for 2 days, and now my tits are like watermelons. I had mastitis last week (still on antibiotics) and now I have ANOTHER clogged duct. I spend more time massaging my breasts than playing with by baby.

I switched to block feeding yesterday.... Keeping my fingers crossed. going to ask for a lactation consultant consult tomorrow at my 6 week PP visit.

I'm uncomfortable. I choke my child. I leak all over everything 24/7. :(

Re: Come in and whine about oversupply

  • Me too. Just starting out but my baby chokes and spits up like crazy. I've been feeding him completely reclined and it still doesn't help. The second he pulls away, it's like a firehose squirting all over everything. I am doing the block feeding per suggestion from an LC and it does seem to be working.

  • Loading the player...
  • I can hand express forever.. ive tested and i can shoot DH from across the coffee tableb (3ft plus). Its so forceful it shoots into my pump tubes sometimes, which isn't supposed to happen. I'm at like 36 hrs into block feeding and it does seem better. ...

Be careful with going too long on block feedings or you may get too many blocked ducts. if you've been nursing on both sides then first begin feeding in one side per feeding. Do that for 3-5 days and evaluate. Then you can move to block feeding two feeds on one side then two feeds on the other side. Some go by hour blocks like 3 hours on one side then 3 hours on the other side but then you have to figure out what to do if they cluster feed for three hours straight before bed then sleep 5 hours and one side gets a lot of use and the other goes a long time without use. Don't pump the side that isn't being used. If miserable pump just til letdown or hand express til let down and then stop. If you pump off oz then that tells your body that you need that milk in addition to what baby needs. When baby starts sputtering or choking unlatch and let hardest flow go into a towel or cup. Try football hold with babs head higher than breast. Don't pump until this gets better You can consider a short time use of peppermint to see if it will hel temporarily lower supply. You can drink a little bit less water as well
I've only fed 1 breast since week 1.... I'm doing 2 feedings on 1 breast (approx 4 hours). I'm thinking this is the time to really get my supply down even if it creates blocked ducts because I'm ON antibiotics until Wednesday.

My supply responds drastically to any changes. I have so much stored I'd take too little at this point and supplement with breastmilk bottles white re-building.

And yes whine away. It is a very difficult thing to deal with and a lot of moms want to wean over it and the digestive problems that comes with that
Yes, my calm/peaceful baby has turned into a crying nightmare. I have had little to no fun with my baby for an entire week. :(

  • AmyG does it cause digestive problems for baby, mom, or both?

You have milk stored? Have you stopped pumping?
Yes. I have a lot of milk stored because I was so uncomfortable the first several weeks... (hence likely why the over supply) and then was so uncomfortable in the mornings after I'd pump until empty.... until a little over a week ago when he started eating like crazy at exactly 5 weeks. I think today his growth spurt might officially be over-- he is eating significantly shorter feedings and going longer between feeds.

  • Still dealing with over supply heretoo but it is getting better with block feeding.  I think the oversupply is why we have thrush now - leaky boobs = moist environment for yeast to multiply

  • I had this really badly with DD1, luckily she's still nursing so this time around it's a bit better because she'll drain both sides when she nurses which helps with the discomfort. I find hand expressing some out first helps with DD2's latch and helps keep her from choking. She's very gassy though and has massive stomach emptying spit-ups. Lots of burping and keeping her upright after feeding seems to help.
