Child friendly vacations in the US / Canada

We are starting to look for child friendly summer vacations in the US. Growing up I traveled a lot in Europe with my family and I will introduce that to A as well but my husband and I want explore the US with her as well. We're from the east coast but would love to travel every where.

Any recommendations?

  • The national parks are usually really nice. Georgia - rent a cabin and go hiking to see waterfalls (many have paths where you can take strollers). Disney!

For a baby this age Id do something easy. If you're on the EC I'd suggest beach this summer. If it's during the summer Id suggest Cape Cod or Maine. Down south gets really hot in the summer. When I was baby we always went to Maine and we loved it. We also had a family camp on a lake in the Adirondacks too. When I was older my family packed up (2 sets of aunts, uncles and cousins plus us) and we lived in campers for months and just traveled the country.
  • National Parks! I didn't even think of those. SC is on our list for the south and Maine is an option if we choose to go north!

I definitely want a beach scene, hopefully there will be no sand eating.

  • As far as beaches..on the East Coast I like Dewey Beach in Delaware. There's also Ocean City in MD.

West coast I love Santa Barbara. They have a really cute zoo too that's much more manageable than the SanDiego for really small kids (I like San Diego too..we used to stay at the navy base). Plus the beach in Santa Barbara is so pretty.

I'm in Kentucky and Lexington is great for kids. There's a great Children's museum downtown and the entire downtown is pretty family friendly and there's the Horse Park and local horse farms you can tour. Horse racing is In October & April at Keeneland.

Disney is really pricey for such young LOs that can't really do a lot, and won't remember a thing. I like Myrtle Beach, since it's very family friendly. Most hotels have suites with a couple rooms, that also have kitchenettes, which makes it easy to keep LOs favorite foods handy. It also is really inexpensive for ocean front rooms (since there's miles of beach front resorts), where you're right on the beach. Having more than one room is nice because you can put LO down for the night (or a nap) and still enjoy the balcony, watch TV etc. With our first, we weren't really thinking about our new lifestyle, and ended up sitting in the quiet hotel room afternoons while she napped, and couldn't do anything at night. I've never spent so much time in a hotel room in my life! Regardless of where you go, I'd get a suite at a hotel with a child watching facility if you can find one that will take a one year old, so you can also enjoy some adult time.

I understand why many people don't want to bring a kid to Disney World/Land until they are much older, but I just wanted to point out that at Disney World kids are free until they turn three years old. We are hoping to go this summer! :)
