Need a Rocker/Glider?

Alrighty, so we've got a small nursery and I'm wondering if we really NEED a rocker or glider or if the couch will do (for feedings). I can't imagine having enough space for a glider and ottoman and I also don't know where we'd put it after we didn't need it in the babies room anymore. Thoughts?

Re: Need a Rocker/Glider?

  • You might want one later. I bought a large arm chair for my daughter's room when she was about 6 months and I still hardly use it. 90% of the time I'm in the living room in my recliner. The couch will work fine as long as it's the type that's pretty supportive or with arms. We have this couch and it's very uncomfortable to try and nurse on.

  • We utilized our 3 lazyboy rocker/recliner arm chairs all the time over the past year. Didn't really use the rock function, however the recline & ability to put feet up are a necessity to me. We were in our chair the first 3 weeks every single night & most days between diaper changes.

If you like your couch for supportive arms cam us pillows if need be. Would add an ottomam to put up feet, but that is me.

  • If you are BFing you need something that is supportive of your back. I tried a couch with DD1 and within a week I was at BRU buying whatever they had on hand.

  • I have a hand me down rocker recliner in DS's room that I love. We only have a couch downstairs, and I much prefer sitting in the recliner to feed him. It's nice to put up my feet, but sometimes I can't get the foot rest down without waking him up. That's the one plus I can see to having an ottoman instead of recliner. If we did not gave a two story house, I'd probably use this chair for all his feelings.

  • I thought the same thing (space wise) but then decided on just a rocking chair. My MIL found one for us at a consignment shop for $40. My aunt is making us a chair pad to match the nursery and that is all we are going to use (besides our couch).

  • We've never had a rocker or glider. I EBF and use the couch or our bed (propped up against the headboard) to feed DS (did the same with DD). Since I've never had one, I don't know what I'm missing, but I do think it would be nice to have to rock LO to sleep.

  • We use our rocker, still, every night. For me, while breastfeeding, it was a must have. The couch was not supportive enough and I also really liked the quiet time with my baby away from the rest of the bustle of the household. We still nurse in her room morning and night and read each night as well. If you don't have the room, make sure you invest in a good, supportive and comfortable chair for somewhere in your living space, especially if you plan to BF.

  • We have a rocking chair and honestly. I have not breastfed once in it. To me it's really uncomfortable for feedings and I prefer my living room couch or the bed. I did start using the chair around 2 months to rock LO to sleep . This was a hand me down from a friend. I wouldn't have bought one myself though. IMO it's unnecessary for me. I could get the baby to sleep by just rocking her in my arms I only use because it's there already
