Help with sleeping positions.

The heartburn has reached a new peak. When I am on my side, I am waking up EVERY hour with severe pain.  I propped up pillows to try sleeping on an incline, and couldn't even fall asleep due to severe back pain and pressure/pain in my lower abdomen.  We have a recliner on our downstairs level, but I am still 8 weeks until my due date.  Suggestions? I'm already on Zantac and tums.  I am just so tired and sick of this.

Re: Help with sleeping positions.

  • I've somehow trained my body over the last few weeks to sleep on my side on an incline. I've got about five pillows and the top of my Snoogle under my head, with the rest of the Snoogle under my belly, through my legs and on my back. It's the only thing I can get to work :(. Maybe try the recliner as a last resort?

  • I have slept in the recliner a couple of times and have slept for longer then in bed.

Sorry you're struggling to sleep. I can only imagine how uncomfortable and frustrating it is. I only have occasional heartburn, but my hips are starting to really hurt again. I second the trying lots of pillows to try to prop yourself up. When I do get heartburn, that helps, and also not eating a large amount too close to bedtime, just a snack, or a drink.

  • That's the thing though - I generally don't eat before bed, if I have a drink it's usually milk to combat the heartburn.  I'm trying a ton of different positions with the snoggle, and @AriaAmante143, I've been sleeping that way for awhile.  I'm all belly, so the belly is starting to get really uncomfortable that way.  And when i finally do get comfortable, she goes BSC.  But I'm willing to try just about anything at this point, so please keep the suggestions coming!

  • If you're willing to try a homeopathic remedy... My SIL swore by taking lemon oil to combat her heartburn throughout pregnancy. I don't have heartburn consistently enough to say whether or not its "tried & true" but I did already take a capsule full today in order to trump any Superbowl food that may cause heartburn today.

  • Last pregnancy I slept sitting up for the last 4 months.
    I couldn't sleep
On my side propped up because it didn't help the heartburn at all.

I keep my tums beside my bed at all times and take several throughout the night just to get some rest.

This time, the heatburn just started about 3 weeks ago.
Most nights I can lay on my side propped up a bit as long as I take a tums or two right before bed and a couple through the night.

  • Call your doctor. I think there are other medications that can help. Lucky for me Zantac and Tuns still do the trick....

  • So sorry, no heartburn, but I still feel your pain about the comfort!! My hips kill me at night and I just can't get comfortable. I have what I call my "pillow fort" going on but it only helped for a couple nights, now I'm back to just trying to nap as much as I can on the couch. Once I do get comfortable LO decides to kick the crap out of me. I'm in denial that I should probably just sleep on the couch, but I can't imagine doing it for the next 6 weeks.

  • I've been sleeping propped up for a few months due to horrible rhinitis. My hips and back start to kill me as well cuz I'm so much belly as well. I have a boppy wedge that I cram under my belly while I'm propped up and it's been working better than any pillows. Then with the wedge, I jam pillows all around me to fill in the spaces. Rolling over is a nightmare, but at least I'm getting a few hours at a time instead of waking up evey hour on the hour. I hope one of these suggestions helps you!
  • Yep- ask the doctor. My heartburn was getting so bad I finally went back on my Prilosec. Ahhhh sweet relief within a day
  • Milk will actually worsen the heartburn! I hope you find relief soon. Zantac was working beautifully, but as of 2-3 days ago, I'm thinking it's time for another plan!
  • I was just looking at other non drug remedies today - after my prilosec failed me last night and my heartburn was so bad it caused me to throw up.  I read that while milk does give some immediate relief, in the long run, nutrients in milk, particularly fat, will stimulate the stomach to produce more acid.
