RSV (a bit long)

At my little ones 10 day well visit, I mentioned to my pedi that DS (3 yo) had a cold, and that he had a sick visit later that day. She warned me of RSV, and told me to look for fast shallow breathing, gasping, wheezing, blue lips and a cough , runny nose, mucus, fever. Ds tested negative for rsv- (instead he had bronchitis- the beginning symptoms) I thought we were in the clear. Both her and I caught a cold, so we did the nasal saline drops, cold mist humidifier, but she developed a cough. (No fever) I brought her in, and she tested positive for RSV at 15 days old. I just wanted to cry. The good news was that it hadn't moved into her lungs, but she was having a bit of trouble breathing. Since RSV is viral, you can only treat the symptoms, and for us that is using the nebulizer for albuterol treatments. We had to get checked again after 5 days, and again got lucky that it hadn't moved to her lungs (if it was in her lungs, they would of admitted her to the hospital) We are now on Day 11 ( usually runs 10-14 days) and we are on the mend! But I just wanted to let others know, if you are concerned about your lo and a cold, don't hesitate to call your doctor! My mom was here the day she developed her cough, and said to me- it sounds like she has a cold. Thankfully, my pedi had told me to call if she got a cough (she told me that at this age, lo shouldn't be coughing). Today , we are finally leaving the house!

  • Yikes!  So glad your daughter is doing better, and that she didn't wind up in the hospital!

  • I'm so sorry DD isn't feeling well. I'm glad you caught it early and it hasn't gotten in her lungs yet.

  • Aw so sorry. Tis the rsv season. It can be a really scary ordeal for our little ones. My 10 yo who is a former 29 weeker got it as an infant. It was super scary because she did the wheezing thing and had a huge fever. I'm glad it didn't travel to your lo's lungs. Glad everyone in your house is on the mend.

  • Rsv is my biggest fear with this LO. I wish I could put him in a bubble until spring time. I'm glad your baby is doing well and no lung issues.
  • @kvochka. That was my biggest fear too. I bought an Ergo this week, and it keeps her pretty close to me, so that when we do go, it protects her a little bit. I'm so thankful she is doing better- here's to a healthy rest of the season!
  • Wow that is scary. I'm glad that things are looking better now and I hope LO is fully recovered soon.
