Breastfeeding & bottles!

I tried to introduce a bottle to LO for the first time and she didn't take very well to it. She just kept spitting whatever milk that leaked into her mouth out. I used the Avent natural nipple bottles. I'm not even feeling ready to introduce a bottle to be quite honest I just tried it because I was only able to pump an oz and didn't feel like freezing it. I know it's best to have someone else attempt while I'm in another room but again it was just to see what she would do with it.

Anyways there's not a huge point to this post other than to see if anyone else has not introduced a bottle, when are you planning on it? What brand will you start with? Is anyone planning on not introducing a bottle at all, and going straight to a cup?

Re: Breastfeeding & bottles!

  • I don't know if we'll use bottles... I don't have any plans to. I don't even own a pump. I'd like to BF for a year so this may change, obviously. But so far I haven't felt the need to be away from him and I'm terrified of pumping.

  • We have to do bottles while I'm at work - the Medela ones have been just fine for us.
  • We use Dr Browns. When he takes them, he doesn't have any problems. Most of the time he refuses to drink from it though.

I'm not sure when we will introduce a bottle. At first, I didn't want to ever have to introduce one. Now, I keep thinking I should have a freezer stash. I've never owned a pump but I'd like to buy one soon and then I'll probably introduce DD to a bottle. However, I don't want to do it for convenience, I would only get her used to it for emergencies or if I absolutely needed to be out for more than a few hours. I think we will start with the plates nursed bottles, the ones that have liners, I heard they were good for bf babies.

  • @smilingeyes2308 I agree that it's good to get them used to in case of emergencies, which is why I do have a small freezer stash but haven't quite practiced with the bottles yet. My next brand that I have on hand is the playtex with liners so will try that one too :)

I think I might be able to manage getting to a year without ever having to use bottles but that is still a while away and who knows what the next 6 months will bring.
  • @smilingeyes2308: Thank you so much!! :) It's my new favorite picture. My mom knitted him the sweater and I'm just in love with it!

I've tried a few brands and DD preferes the Tommee Tippie brand. They have a more natural, breast-like shape and feel. DD never turns down food so she will take other bottles, but she gives me a disgusted look and doesn't latch as well with other brands.

    This exactly.
Also, DS is teething, and has a hard time latching sometimes. He always takes a bottle though.

  • We tried to introduce a bottle around 6 weeks, but she has not been a fan.

We tried Medela, Dr. Brown, Tomee Tipee, and one other type (blanking on it..) and LO refuses them, or at best, will eat about 0.25oz and then scream for me/my breast.

She will take milk from a medicine dropper, but that requires a lot of time and patience.  We'll be trying a cup or non-glass shot glass with her probably the next time I pump, which now that I'm not working, is not often.

  • Both of my kids have been fine with the Medela bottles that come with the pump. With DS, I EP'd and then went to formula, and used Medela the whole time. DD is EBF, probably 95 percent from the boob, maybe more, but has had maybe 10 bottles in her life. I try to give her a bottle a week, so that she never refuses, but we've definitely skipped weeks.

It takes her a long time to get started on a bottle. She'll sit there and gum it and not eat anything for 30 or 45 minutes, and then she latches and eats several ounces in a few minutes.
