Breastfeeding

EBF, when did you intro solids?

We're not quite there yet, but I am just curious to know when EBF mommies started introducing solids just for taste / texture experience.

My LO is doing great w/ EBF, he is a robust 17 lbs and not even 4 months.  I think when we are ready, I would like him to try some mashed avocado and sweet potato as starter foods.  I am mainly thinking of letting him try a little bit just for sake of experience, I'm not intending to replace feedings or begin weaning.

When did you intro solids?

  • Nothing but milk until 6 months, then BLW. LO took right to it, we started with sweet potato (baked and cut into sticks), avocado (cubed), steamed zucchini sticks, and steamed broccoli florets

  • We started about a week before DD turned 6 months. We mashed up avocado with breast milk and let her try it. Make sure you take a video the first time you feed your child- it's so fun to look back on!
  • With my first we started BLW at 6 months. She wasn't too interested in eating at first she mostly just played with her food. Avocado was one of her first favorites though its a very good first food to offer.

  • We let him start tasting food at about 5.5 months. He is 6 months and only eats a few spoonfuls. Oatmeal is his favorite so far.

  • We started BLW the week she turned 6 months.  First meal offered was sticks of sweet potato, broccoli florets, and sticks of baked chicken.  She tasted everything, but it took her a good month to really learn how to ingest food :)

Current recommendations are to wait until 6 months, but I think DD would've been more into it if we waited until 7 months.  We started because we were excited (and she was sitting well enough, didn't have tongue thrust reflex, etc).  WIth the next baby, I think we'll hold off a bit longer if needed (until LO is actually trying to steal our food and whatnot).
  • 6 months here too. We started with some mashed sweet potatoes and moved on from there. We skipped rice cereal and just do one "meal" a day for now (DD is almost 7 months).

I firmly believe 'food before one is just for fun' - no need to rush it!

  • We started blw at just over 7 months. She just started 2 meals a day at 10 months. I also stick with food before one is just for fun.

  • We started purees at 4 months and 1 week, after out pedi said it was okay. He was showing all the signs of readiness and had been trying to steal our food.

  • We started with table food when DD met the requirements: pincher grip, sitting unassisted, loss of tongue thrust reflex and interest (crying to get at our food).

Luckily she also met a personal preference I had to having her first tooth (which I heard is indicative of a maturing digestive system). This was at about 6.5 months.

She is a fairly advanced eater. Most babies don't really get much down until 10 months or so. She was plowing through three meals a day by 8 or 9 months.

No need to rush solids. After the six month mark, look for those milestones that indicate his readiness for solids and go from there.

  • A week or two after DS turned 6 months. But we've been gradual about it. He's almost 8 months and having one solid a day. He's not really liking anything we give him. I'm in no big rush. Some babies start at 10 months, even 12... it's not really nutritionally necessary until then.

  • I've been reading posts and I'm not quite sure what BLW means. Can someone tell me what it stands for? Thanks!
