DD was ill and now won't sleep in her crib

My daughter is 2.5 She has always been a great sleeper. Last week she refused to lay in her crib for nap or night. We tried letting her cry it out for 2 days and then took her to the doctor thinking that something was wrong. Sure enough, she had a double ear infection which was likely hurting when she went down in her crib. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and told us to let her sleep with us because it was more important for her to sleep and get better then to have her in her crib if she was going to stand and scream for 3-5 hours. We let her sleep with us 4 days. Last night we put her back in her crib and she stood crying for 4 hours. Then DH went in and she insisted "I stay momma". Then I went in and slept in a sleeping bag on her floor. My daughter stood in her crib for 2 hours watching me sleep but still refused to lie down. On top of all of this she has become incredibly clingy. She must be held and needs to be with momma at all times. How do I break this? How do I get her back in her crib? Thanks for your help!

  • Thanks. She is almost a week on antibiotics so she should not be in any pain anymore.  I will try your suggestions.  Thank you so much for this idea!

  • We had a similar situation a while ago, only DD was throwing up instead of an ear infevtion and she was sleeping in her stroller instead of with us (it seemed to help her keep things down to have her head elevated). Anyways, we waited until she was better and put her back in bed and all toughed it out the first couple of nights. It got back to normal rather quickly. It also helped us that we could pack up the stroller and stick it in the garage. Out of sight out of mind. She also likes to sleep on the floor when she's sick for some reason. We lay a towel down next to her bed and go with it. When she's better, the towel disappears and it's time to go back to bed. For a few days, it leads to a fussy request to have it back at bedtime, but it only lasts a couple minutes.

The sleeping bag isn't a bad idea, though. That's what they do for some of the kids in the sleep clinics. Leave and go to your bed when she calls asleep and move the bag a little closer to the door every day... but this obviously takes longer than having a couple miserable nights and then being done with it.
  • Speaking of which, she caught RSV from my husband so now is sleeping on a towel on her floor. She'll toss and turn all night in her bed when she's sick, but give her permission to sleep on the floor and you're good to go.
  • The floor sleeping is funny, my God daughter has a sleeping bag on the floor in her room that she spends 90% of her nights on. Her parents decided it wasn't a fight they cared to fight every night.
