Gender swaying - does it work? Or only 50% of the time :)?

I was just wondering how many of you ladies believe the theory that sex a few days before O makes girls, and sex closer to O makes boys. With my boys, we definitely hit the day before/ day of O mark. With my girl, it was a couple of days before. This time, we weren't exactly "trying"; it was a rash decision in the moment. I was 4/5 days before O, so I thought it was super unlikely that I would get pg. But you all know how that story ends - here i am! So I am wondering if this might be another girl. I took my temps, so I know when O occurred. What do you all think about gender swaying? Fact or fiction?

  • My parents used this method for my brother, so I believe there is some science behind it.

  • With DS I was charting (not purposefully trying for a boy) and he was conceived on O day, so it fits with the theory. This time I gave a half-hearted try at having sex a few days prior to O but I wasn't temping so I am not even 100% sure if I O'd when I think I did. We'll see!

I agree with PP that there is possibly some merit to it but there are a lot of other factors

  • I think there is truth to it.
  • Totally agree with pp, that there is science behind and it is true about the speed of the swimmers and such but you still have your outliers.

When I got pregnant with my daughter I had an IUI. So the sperm were put directly in my uterus. They still had some swimming to do but a lot closer to the target and I had a girl.

  • I think there's truth to it. With this baby I know when we dtd but not when I ovulated and when I went in for my ultrasound the due date made it so I would have ovulated like 4 days after. And we're having a girl.

  • I think timing as well as diet can influence what you'll get, but in the end you're just increasing/decreasing chances so it's never definite.

  • I'd be curious to know what the sex breakdown is for those who use IUI (which is what we did). Because if there's any truth to the theory, I'd think IUI babies would more often be boys because IUI is done very close to ovulation and with the sperm put closer to the egg, it would seem one of those "fast" boy sperms would get there most frequently.

  • According to my biologist father, this is true in theory, but is far from foolproof. I don't actually know statistics but I'd say more than 50%, less than 100% :)

Like I said, my IUI produced a girl.

What does diet have to do with which sperm gets to the egg????

So we've got two IUIs that produced girls. We're not finding out sex with ours, but both DH and I are feeling girl at the moment. Hmmm.

  • We'll see - DS was the day of O. This one was two days before. We weren't trying to time it any particular way, just happened to work out that way.

The diet thing someone mentioned I think has to do with the acidic or alkaline environment that either boy or girl sperm prefer - something like that. I didn't read much on the diet stuff.

  • Speaking of old wives tells.. Has anyone ever heard that a baby that is interested it can give you an idea of what you're having? H and I went to a super bowl party last night, someone there had their twins. They have a little girl and a little boy who are going on 1. One of the ladies there told me last night that if one was more into me than the other that meant I was having that one. At the beginning the little girl seemed more into me but later on become uninterested but the little boy was definitely playing with me and laughing and carrying on. So according to that I'm having a boy. I definitely am not basing anything off of that! Just was wondering if anyone else has ever heard that one before?! I definitely had not.

    Sorry just saw this...

Your diet changes the ph levels in your body, and this in turn affects the male/female sperm differently. Ovulation also changes the ph levels of your body. These two combined will increase/decrease male and female sperm, therefore timing and diet are effective.

The main reason for timing is because of the way it impacts ph levels, which is the same as controlling your diet. Yes, male sperm swim faster but if the environment isn't friendly to them they won't last long. That's why more people are leaning towards O+12 instead of shettles method.

Edit because it came out weird looking!

  • We only hit 0-2 and 0-3 because DH went out of town, so we'll see if we get a girl.  I think it's probably slightly more likely than pure chance, but not 100% by any means.

  • @BlckRoses it will be interesting to find out! I don't know if it worked last time, or if it will work this time either since we don't know the exact date of conception.
