STM: Entertaining toddlers/kids

Just wondering what everyone else is doing to entertain their toddlers or kids while feeding a newborn? I am breastfeeding LO and she can only have a good latch if I have her in a cross cradle position, with one hand holding her head and the other holding my boob. So I don't have any hands free while I am nursing. I need some ideas to keep my 2 1/2 year old occupied besides Disney Junior.

  • My DS1 looks at books, does puzzles, plays with blocks or his train set. He's always been really good at entertaining himself, though. I actually have tried to time my nursing sessions with DS1 snacks and meals which helps too.

  • I'll give my son a snack in his highchair sometimes
  • Bump.. She's getting pissed and jealous I am bfing. This blows.
  • If DS needs some attention and isn't content playing by himself I have him grab a book and sit next to me and he will turn the pages while I read it to him. Ofcourse this only works if they can turn the pages on their own.

  • Download some "educational" apps to your iPad/tablet/smart phone. Also these: https://www.melissaanddoug.com/water-wow-travel-books-animals

  • DS and I read books and play checkers. He's almost 5 though.

  • Thank you all for the good ideas! DD got a new Leap Pad tablet for Christmas, so I am going to start using that and I will try to get her to be better about holding her own book for me to read. And if nothing else, I at least feel better knowing I am not the only one using the Disney channel for a few minutes of calmness :)

  • Haven't had DD#1 at home by myself yet, but she's 19 months and I put together a bunch of busy bags to entertain her: playdough, magnetic 'rocks', sticker books, colouring books, crayola magic colouring things, a matching cards game, whose nose? game, a tin full of those squeeze food tops. So far we've mostly read books together, sung songs and played 'where is?' games while I'm nursing DD#2.

  • I am nursing the same exact way so I feel your pain about not being hands free. So far, DD1 who's also 2.5yo watches one tv program, plays her leap pad, or I set her up with activity first (paint, playdoh, coloring book, etc). The activity is sometimes a bust bc she needs my help when I can't but so far she seems okay waiting till I'm finished.

  • I have started to try to time when the baby is going to be hungry for when I have DS occupied with an activity. For example, I try to time DS1's breakfast and lunch for when baby will be hungry, or today I had an activity planned of making paper plate masks with crayons and sat DS1 down to it right when I knew DS2 should be hungry. I have also had DS1 take a bath and then have the Boppy in the bathroom with me and feed him in there while DS1 plays in the tub. Other ideas: read a book while feeding, play 'I Spy', or just let them watch tv. DS1 is definitely watching more TV than in the past but everyone is happy and healthy so I'm going for it.
