Multiples

Something in the water

No real questions, just chitchat.

I had my 13 w appt yesterday. The nurse told me since my 9 w appt, they have had 6 more sets of twins show up on u/s. Growing up, there were three sets of twins in my class of 66. I wonder how many my babies will have :)

Anyway, appt went great. We opted out of the nt scan and genetic testing. Our anat scan is scheduled for 18 w.

Also got a chance to talk to the dr about delivery (early I know, but I'm a researcher/planner). She is very supportive of vaginal birth to the point where if all the stars align, she will give me her # to call instead of having someone else from her ob group attend. I was very happy because I like her a lot.

Re: Something in the water

  • When I announced my twin pregnancy, there were 3 other couples at my firm expecting twins.

I signed up for Multiples birth class at ou hospital and there was a waiting list.  Ten couples per class.  my class was also full when we started.

  • I don't know anyone around here expecting twins :(

My ob is not really supporting a vaginal birth, so I am bumming out, but trying to get over it.
  • There were three of us pregnant with twins at the same time within a 10 mile radius. Crazy. My OB said they usually keep about 8 sets of multiples at a time but were starting to see an increase. One way or another two sets of them will be in school together. Not sure if we will start our boys on time or hold them back a year. We will see.

I'm not surprised by an increase in multiples, considering how many women are forced to undergo fertility treatments in order to conceive at all.  I mean, that's the reason why I have twins.  Two embryos were put in, and now I have two beautiful girls.

Yes, I understand that's the reason for the overall increase in the rate of multiples. In this case the nurse said one set was IVF, but the other five were spontaneous like mine.
  • When we went in for our anatomy scan the doctor told us we were his 4th set of twins that day for the anatomy scan! I am in an infertility support group here where I live so quite a few of us have multiples of some kind.

  • My neighborhood has 4 sets of twins under 18 months. It's fun!
  • I work in a small remote office of a large company. In my building there are three sets of twins all within 1 month. One of the families (who I adore) even moved 5 minutes away from us.

  • At our NT the sonographer said they had been seeing an increase in twins lately too and they were all spontaneous.
