Just how identical are identical twins?

I have 10.5 month old di di twin girls. By all appearances, the appear identical but I haven't had the cheek swab done yet. They seem to be cutting their first tooth together. Is that par for the course? Their hair is also growing in at the same rate and they have never been more  than .5lb and .25" apart.

Re: Just how identical are identical twins?

  • It really varies. I have identical girls that are 10 oz apart (over a lb at one point, which was a significant difference given their weights at the time), and one has more hair than the other. They can develop at different rates, including teething. Some ID twins are going to be eerily similar and others will have lots of differences.

  • Everyone tells me my boys look exactly the same, but they look quite different to DH and me...they are mo-di (initially thought to be mo-mo) twins. I think a lot of it has to do with their head shapes being different. One has a rounder head while the other has a narrower one. They also have consistently measured a half pound apart.

  • I think my didi ID girls look very different, but other people can't tell them apart. Get the swab so you know!

I'm going through this with my di/di boys right now! Except I have an older singleton and when I look at all three I have a hard time telling some baby pictures apart. So it makes guessing if they are ID or not even harder. My singleton looks slightly different here because you can see his hair line more but that's only because of the angle. My twins are a pound and a half apart but that's the only difference I can see between them. I'm getting the swab done soon because I am dying to know! When they are older I'm betting people will think they are triplets. In the picture my singleton is a few weeks older a month and a half if you take in adjusted age and two pounds bigger but if they were all the same size and in real life laying in front of me I couldn't tell who was who haha

  • My twins are the eerily similar identicals. Their appearance, their habits, the part of their hair, everything is the same! The even sit in the same position at the same time! They are like carbon copies of each other!

  • *I* think my girls look pretty different but I'm the only one. Not even dh can tell them apart all the time. I pushed hard on the fraternal front but when I look at them feature by feature it's hard not to see how similar they are even. They both even have an odd shade of hazel for eye color. I'll break down and do the cheek swab eventually but for now I'm lazy.

Just found out my di/di girls are identical! DH and I have always been able to tell them apart though. One has a rounder face and less hair while the other has a more narrow face and more hair. Thought for sure they were frats! I would definitely suggest the cheek swab to know for sure :) nice to not have to explain anymore why I was unsure if they were identical or fraternal when people asked!
  • Yeah, I'm definitely over explaining to people why I don't know if they are identical and having them look at me like I'm crazy or stupid.
  • I think my boys look different.  We can tell them apart easily.  BUT I know they are ID.  We tested them and I just know.  I mean yes I think they look different, but I also know they look very much the same.  They did cut teeth within a week of each other, achieve milestones within a few weeks to a month of each other, get their hair cut at the same time, they even poop at the same time now.

My mo/di girls have different shapes heads, one is rounder. At birth they looked much different. One was a bit bigger and the head shape was more pronounced. Now they are exactly the same weight and have both filled out a lot. at almost 4 mo it's extremely hard to tell them apart. DH and I confuse them all the time. Luckily, one of them has a tiny skin tag on her ear do we can check that when in doubt!
