My mom's friend is expecting twin grandbabies in May. Her DS and DIL live out of state, but are moving back home soon after babies are born until they can buy a house here. DIL doesn't want to CD, but mom's friend see's my DS cloth and is in love. She is thinking she will just have cloth at her house and use it while they are with her. (she will also babysit) She hopes that DIL will see how awesome and easy it is and switch over. She asked me what she should get. I showed her the different types of diapers I have. She seems most interested in AI2, and said just tell me what to buy. She has about $140 to spend since she is returning bedding. I suggested Best Bottoms shells and at least 2 dozen prefolds. She could snappi when they are younger and then just tri-fold. Should I suggest small or medium GMD prefolds? At 6 months I am still using smalls snappied, but I have a peanut. Do smalls or mediums work better to be tri-folded into covers? I don't want to overwhelm her. So I am trying to keep it as simple as possible.
I have heard that the small GMD work well to be trifolded or stuffed into pockets until LO hits the largest rise. Flats would always fit and I like my padfolded flats better than trifolded prefolds, but that might just be personal preference. Flip inserts are made to work the entire time but I don't have any experience with them.
If she is interested in ai2, why are you looking at prefolds?
Because of the budget?
FWIW, I had DS in red edge prefolds since 3/4 Months because he was sch a chunk. But now I'm using the yellows again since I trifold for the PBS (peanut butter shit, we're using that instead of poo now right?).
If she's like my mom or pediatrician, prefolds won't scare her. Both of mine used prefolds on their children. If she's going to watch them a month or two after the birth, I'd go with small prefolds. Mediums would be way too big. I still need to fold the small prefolds down on my 10 pound 2 month old.

I haven't had to fold down my smalls since like 4 weeks. I quit trying to snappi them a few weeks ago...

Twins will most likely be on the small side. Smalls will probably be huge on them even at a month or two.
My friends twins who at almost two months older than my skinny guy are only about one or two pounds bigger than him.
If she likes them, she can always order mediums. Or she can invest in some BB inserts.

Oh, I totally agree. I just meant holy crap my kid must be chubby compared to others his age
With a $140 budget and the hope of convincing a DIL to CD I would recommend Kawaii P&N pockets. Those should fit on the smallest rise by the time the family moves. Plus they are quite inexpensive when ordered direct. She could get 22 of them for $140 (more if she orders them when they run their 25% off promos).
(FWIW, I think many twin moms start with preemie size prefolds...which are 2 sizes smaller than 'small' prefolds. A GMD small PF with a Best Bottom cover isn't likely to fit average size twins for a couple of months I would think.)
I hate my pure and naturals by the way. They didn't fit my 7 pound boy around the waste at birth. And the don't contain newborn poop.
If I didnt have to send pockets to daycare, I would seriously consider selling these.
I wanted to love them so much after all the great recommendations, but I totally agree with this. I actually DID sell mine, though. They didn't fit her as a NB, not until 2+ months, and even then, I just never reached for them because they didn't fit right and didn't seem to work as well as other pockets.
thanks for all the responses. Sorry I've had a busy day and no time to sit at a computer. While I would try to convince someone with pockets, I showed her pockets and she liked the AI2 better. I said prefolds over inserts because when they are little I'm afraid of EBF poo (shit now?) getting all over and her needing more covers. They are easy to trifold, but also can be fastened. I know twins will probably be tiny, but she thinks since her boys were big the new babies will be too. Which is why I chose best bottoms covers. They are one size but go down pretty small. I do have nb workhorses and some fitteds I made along with covers I could let them borrow if needed. I have actually used GMD smalls since birth on my 5lb 9 oz guy, so I know they can work with a bitty baby, but they were bulky. I think I will recommend the smalls. worst case scenario they have burp cloths and rags for life and I will buy the covers off her.
The Best Bottoms do go really small, but they probably won't fit most newborns (especially since twins tend to be a little smaller). DS was 9 lbs before I tried them on him, and they did work with a fitted but not the insert yet.
I think the babies won't be with Grandma till 2 or 3 months so I am hoping they fit by then. I told her about newborn diapers, but she still thinks they babies will be big. I didn't want to fight with her.
SoftBums covers are one size and might work better than best bottoms. They are a bit more in price, but the resell value is really good. Plus, I think they fit starting at 5 lbs. Worth looking into them.

The down side is both have looked like flying squirrels in some sleepers...
