Birth control options

Well I've decided to go with the Mirena for birth control. I'm so petrified. Has anyone gotten this? What is the procedure? How did you do? How are you doing?

Re: Birth control options

  • I just got it this week! The procedure was quick and only took about 5 minutes! They open your cervix with a clamp and it's feels like a mild contraction when it's in, then they clean the cervix, then place the little mirena. I bled for the rest of that day but that's it. Not to bad at all. I can't tell it's even in there.

  • OP I think you need to work on your flagging skills.

  • I had it placed at 7 weeks, the procedure was a bit uncomfortable but only during the clamping stage and then it was fine.  My issue is, i spotted a couple days then stopped, but once I resumed "activities" with my husband after 4 days or so (which my dr said would be fine) I started bleeding again and it has not stopped since (two weeks later).  Heavier than spotting but nothing more than a normal period type bleeding. ANYWAY, this can happen depending on your body and how you handle the additional hormones, etc.  So although some people spot for a couple days and are done, other people like me can be affected differently. Just something to keep in mind.
  • I got mine at my 6 week appt. insertion was a little uncomfortable be didn't last long and I was surprised when it was over. Spotted that day then 5 days later started bleeding like a period and still am . Currently on day 12 of moderate bleeding, not heavy but not light. I have to wear a regular pad and have to change it every couple of hours. I can't feel it but the bleeding is annoying!! Can't wait until it stops!
  • I'm definitely not getting that ever again. I tried it in 2011 and 2012 both time the insertion was ok bit of pinching, mild bleeding after. However a few days later bleeding started and went straight over 12wks along with headaches and I seemed to be angry, irritable like on my cycle 10x worst. It was horrible for me. I've had other friends complain about the same thing. At both 12wk mark I had it removed as it was taking a toll on my body, my family and love life. I hate having to remember to take a pill but i'm on the mini pill and so far i'm ok.
  • I had Skyla (the 3 year version of Mirena) and I hated it.  My husband could feel it inside me, and it gave me lower back pain to the point where I would wake up in the night (not from the baby crying). I was unable to lose any weight while on it, even though I was following Weight Watcher's and running 4-5 miles a day 4 days a week.  Also it sent me on a hormone rage roller coaster way worse than the pill ever did.  So I had it removed after about 4 months.  I almost immediately dropped five pounds over the two weeks after it was removed.

The insertion procedure was about the same as getting a pelvic exam/pap smear for me, uncomfortable but not horrible.  I spotted a lot afterward and never really had a normal period while I was on it.
