Anyone still not given LO peanut butter?

We have serious peanut allergies that run through every generation of DH's family, so we've not allowed Kate to have anything with peanuts in it (including baked goods, etc..)

Has anyone else held off? Are you planning on introducing soon? If so, do you have a plan, or are you planning on getting tested at an allergist first (DH, his brother and my nephew were tested before they ever had nuts...DH's brother and nephew are both severely allergic, as is FIL).

In your case I would have her tested before I tried to introduce it.

Lilly and Finn have both had PB for longer than I would like to admit. But we have no known nut allergies in the family. It is one of the few things Finn eats without a fight. (He will also do almond butter)

  • We have bad tree and peanut allergies in the family. DD tried them at the allergist the first 5 times (they gave her larger amounts each time) we participated in a research study for them.

  • None if my kids (even the 4.5 year old) have ever had peanut butter.

DH is deathly allergic, so we will do an allergy test in a doctor's office.

  • In your case, I'd be very cautious.

We waited until almost 2 with DS1, mostly because I was afraid of the choking hazard than the allergy.  And we were in no rush.

After having no problems w/ DS1 and the fact that DS2 has been around nuts b/c of his brother, I was more open to introducing it.  But we just gave it to him a few weeks ago.  Mostly because I needed more snack ideas (dairy allergy limits our choices).

  • We have no peanut allergies in our family and I thought it would be okay to introduce at 14 months and we found out my son is allergic. I would advise going to an allergist for them to test her and get all the neccessary precautions before it's accidentally given to him. Luckily it's on the mild side for C. Good luck.
  • Us. With both kids - dS1 is 27m. They both have been tested and came out without allergies, but my nut allergies are so severe that we didn't try yet - I can't, DH panics about not getting them clean after and 'poisoning' me and so it just never happened.

  • C has never had peanuts. DD1 is allergic so we have avoided letting C have them. We will have her tested at some point.

  • We haven't yet. DH is allergic to all nuts, so we have been holding off. Partly because we never have nuts in the house, and partly because I am nervous about a reaction. I plan to discuss with the doc at her 18m check up. Or maybe at 2 years. I'm not in a big rush.

  • We have not. Eric is severely allergic, to the point that DH and I don't eat peanuts even when we're not with him, just in case there is residual peanut left behind. He also has two epi pens with him at all times. I'm getting her tested for peanuts when we test her for everything else sometime this spring.

  • We have been giving it to DD for about the last 3 months. Our pediatrician had us try a little peanut butter on the back of her hand a few times just to see if there was a skin reaction. She was fine so we slowly introduced it and she hasn't had any issues. But, I definitely understand the hesitation. I was terrified the first time we gave it to her.

  • DH has a slight peanut allergy but only to certain types of raw nuts. I was nervous to give DD peanut butter so we introduced slowly. Our pedi said to wait until after a year or until she was eating real food better since its a choking hazard. I started by mixing a tiny bit with yogurt to make it really creamy and putting it on toast. Then we tried the mini peanut butter crackers. Then a few bites of pb&j. She's not a be fan so she doesn't eat it much.

Since it's a major concern because of family history I would definitely do the allergy test at the doctors.

  • Peanut /= tree nuts.

    Pet peeve. Sorry.

  • There's only one person in our extended family with a nut allergy, but because DS had such a milk intolerance, we held back until a year with pb. He's been getting it since a year old, in small amounts and shows no signs of any intolerance or allergy.
