102 fever

Ok so Alice has been whiney and clingy all day. She started feeling hot, and her temp was 101.5 at 2:15. Gave her tylenol and she napped. It got down to 100 at one point around 3:30 then started climbing back up. An hour after a lukewarm bath and now we are at 102.1. She is still whiny and clingy but overall in good spirits. When do I really start to worry?

She also has very little interest in eating today. She has had half an oatmeal muffin, a banana, a strawberry and a handful of blueberries today. Wont touch anything else.

She has been grabbing her mouth, but her girlie bits are red too. She isn't crying when she pees on the toilet but got really mad when she wet her diaper.

Re: 102 fever

  • Maybe put a call into the nurse line if you can, they told me at the hospital when Wesley was discharged that if his temp hit over 103 to bring him to the emergency room immediately, don't want to scare you just what they told me. Try the Tylenol, Advil alternating and see if it helps also a cooler bath or maybe take her outside to help cool of. Good luck. Hope she feels better soon.

Henry spikes a 102.5 for no big deal reasons. Remember you can follow Tylenol with Ibuprofen two hours later and stagger them to give her some extra relief, poor thing! Good luck mama!

This! My sis has to go back and forth with Tylenol and Ibuprofen with one of her kids. Personally I wouldn't worry too much yet. Also some kids are just the type that spike up then go down. My oldest stepson is like this and always has been. His fever goes up really high ( like 103-104)then down, then 8 hours later back up then more Tylenol and down again.
I say just follow your instincts and see how she is acting and taking in fluids throughout the night.

  • Thanks guys. I am gonna let this round of tylenol take effect and see how she does. If its not down some, I will call nurse line.

    stupid fevers!

  • Yup ibuprofen is so good for fevers. A cool compress on the head and back too. Alternate every 2 to 4 hours through the night. It should stay lower during the day. Then may spike again at night.

  • Yup I will say it sounds like tonight will be rough for you. I know that I can't sleep and end up on the floor of my kiddos rooms when they are sick. So may the zzzzzzz's be with you and your lo tonight.

  • Thanks again guys! I think the meds are helping. She isn't hot to the touch on her body right now. So that's a plus.

  • This happened with us a couple weeks ago. My pedi actually told me that newer studies are revealing temps up to 105 are not harmful in LOs, which was shocking to me. He also indicated that not eating wasnt nearly as concerning as not drinking fluids, and that we should give him liquids with lots of calories (like juice and milk) and let him eat anything he could stand. But I would agree that 103 and unresponsive to meds is a good threshold for taking her in IF you're worried. If she is still making wet diapers and not showing a lot of other worrisome signs, I think cuddles and fluids are a good temporary remedy. Meds actually hinder the body's ability slightly to fight infection, so I only gave them to Henry when he was fussy and uncomfortable or when I wanted him to be comfortable enough to sleep. For us, it ended up being a virus that ran its course over five or so days -- we cuddled a lot and watched a lot of movies together.

  • I would totally try Ibuprofen if you haven't. My kids never have responded much to Tylenol so we don't use it after the 6 month mark once we can do Ibuprofen :) Just thought I'd let you know it always works for us and worth having on hand if you're currently not using it.

  • Yep, we are doing ibu and tylenol. Ibu does seem to help a bit more so I think we will stick with it.

she is still running a fever. I gave her OJ/water with her cheerios and apricots this morning. I called doc also and left a vm. I am hoping she can fit her in today.

  • Poor girl, hope she feels better soon. I know when I have just a 100 degree fever I feel like complete crap so I can't imagine what it's like for the little ones when they get higher than 102.

We went through roseola hell with our kids. Autumn was the worst. Lots of baby-wearing those few weeks hahaha Snuggles too!

We just went through roseola too. 3 days of high fever (up to 104.7 at one point) but no other symptoms until the rash broke out.  I had him to the docs 3 times.  I have NO idea how you dealt with three kids having it.  I bow down to you my lady!!

I hope Alice feels better soon!

  • Doc does want to see her. Alice is getting grabby at her girlie bits, so we need to rule out UTI.

I did double check the weight dosage, and only give that dose. We also did lukewarm baths and wetting down her hair, cool rags, and peppermint oil along with the meds. The fact that none of that brought it down more than a degree or so is what stressed me out.

I am getting tons of kisses today though, so I'm digging that!

  • Well. All signs are pointing to a bladder infection. WTF? How does a toddler get a bladder infection?? :( Gotta get a urine sample to the lab for confirmation. My poor baby!

Dd got a bladder infection at that age and that was what got her potty trained so quickly. She became hyper aware of the feeling of needing to pee. I wonder if that is what was going on with you dd.

  • I feel so guilty like somehow this is my fault. :( Still haven't gotten a urine catch. Also, her under the arm reading on the thermometer was 102.4 a bit ago. I was taught to add a degree under the arm. Cue freak out! Gave her ibu, rubbed peppermint oil in her back, ran a cool bath, wet her hair, got a cool rag, and put socks soaked in cold water on her feet. Temp came down a degree. Luckily she is chatting and singing at me again so I feel somewhat better. I'm not ok with any of this. I know doc is supposed to wait for conformation of infection but my baby needs meds dammit! :(

  • Ok. No white blood cells in urine, but there was red. We will treat as a bladder infection. Ammoxicillin will be called in and ready in about 45 min from now. I am to follow up with the specialist she gave me the number for to find out why theres red blood cells in her urine. She is having them run a culture on the urine as well, but itll take longer than the other tests.

They did a blood draw as well. Apparently she has great veins. :) Blood test results will be in later. Poor baby has had a really crappy day!

  • @BeaF12 she does have some redness happening. It was a clean catch.

Both me and my dad have red blood cells in our urine too. Never got it checked out though.

  • Thanks @BeaF12. She saw her cousin pee on the potty and was NOT having it. If cousin can do it, she can do it! LOL. Also, I had to distract her with Jake and the Neverland Pirates. ;)
