How much do manual breast pumps suck to use?

I am planning to breastfeed full time (as long as our finances continue to allow me to be a SAHM). I was thinking if I go out somewhere and DH is going to watch LO and needs a bottle. I was thinking I could just use the manual one to make one. I am not planning on making bottles daily. I just hate the idea of buying an electric one if it would only be used on occasion. If we end up doing bottles daily, I would have no problem investing in a good electric pump.

What do you ladies think?

  • They work fine, just slower. If it's only for once in awhile you might like it. Also can depend on your supply, my sister always had a crazy oversupply and could get a ton of milk in no time with a manual pump so that's what she used most of the time.

  • I had one from doing a study and while my arm hurt the entire time I got close to the same output as I did with the electric.

  • Ugh. I'm stuck using one until I can find one foe cheap (insurance only grants one in a lifetime that I used with DS). It's horrible when it's the only one you have. On occasion, it's fine. Cramps my hands and it's so slow!

  • I got a medela manual pump as well as an electric because I've heard great things. I'd say try one first before buying anything extravagant. They are $35 I think at target right now.

  • I'm hoping to rarely need one as well, but I rented an electric from my insurance since it doesn't cost us anything. I'm got a manual one to use on occasion too. Going to try both and use what works best for my situation

@Berry30 Thank you for the heads up... I will look into the $35 one. That is a fair price for what I need it for.

  • They're fine for once in a while.  I took mine once on a trip when DS was about 2 months, so I could pump a bottle for him to drink in the car, and it was fine.

  • It depends how often you pump. Once in a while they're ok, I used a manual when traveling and it did the job but my hand got very sore.
If you pump a lot, electric is way more efficient and if you get a pump bra, you can even do both sides at once and keep your hands free
  • I hated my manual pump, I could never get it to work at all, and I had no trouble with nursing or pumping with an electric pump.
  • Id personally wait and see how BF goes for you in the first place before you invest in either.  If you and little rock at it, you won't need a pump at all.  If it doesn't work out for you then again you may want the electric and you could try EP.  I know at some of the drugstores (in canada) you can rent a hospital grade one for like 1-2$ a day.  And you just buy your own tubing when you first get it.  Either way.  I'd wait and see.

  • I hated mine. It wouldn't release any pressure on its own so each pump the suction would get stronger and stronger. I had to constantly take it off and put it back on.

  • Im a SAHM as well and without an electric pump I was stuck at home as a manual didnt get what I needed and was slow, tiring and frustrating to use. This time around,I HAVE to have an electric.... I need an effective way to pump so I can have some me time out of the house.

  • Call your insurance company - electric pumps are often covered.
