Pregnant after a Loss

34 wk appt & question on when to stop working

TGIF!!! So today was my 34 wk appt and everything was normal although i depise their scale compared to mine :)

The Dr mentioned that at my 38 wk appt they can pull me from work even if i don't have any medical reason... Has anyone else been told this?

With DS i was pulled at 38 wks due to swelling, which I understood but to have them pull me just because I hit 38 wks seems wrong..Although depending on how i feel sitting all day at a desk might not be fun.. What does everyone else plan on doing??

I'm also alittle worried about being home alone from 2/28/14-3/7/14 because that was the week last year we found out I lost the baby and had a D & C so part of me wants to stay busy so i won't think about it all day

M/C found 2/27/13-- D & C 3/6/13

  • If you have no real reason to be pulled out of work, I say just stay at work. I don't know exactly what your maternity leave policy is, but if I did that, I'd cut into my FMLA time at home with the baby and I definitely don't want to do that.

With DS1, he came on a Monday afternoon and I worked until the Friday before that. Medically, I was totally fine and he was fine, so there was no need to not b e at work and cutting into my time off with him. I plan to go until labor with this one as well, assuming no complications.

  • I think it is a personal decision and how you feel.  For me with DS #1 I felt great so I worked until the day before my induction. The other factor for me was PTO. I wanted 12 weeks of maternity leave so I needed all the vacation days I could get to cover my time off.

With DS #2, it was a scheduled c-section so I think I took off the day before to celebrate DS #1's last day of being an only child.

My doctors never mentioned having me stay home.

  • I personally prefer to work until labor unless here is a medical issue obviously. Early leave would also cut into my FMLA, plus I have friends that got bored sitting at home waiting.

  • If you have no medical reason, I say keep working.  I'd hate to stop working at 38 weeks and then not deliver until 41 (I'll be induced at 39, just a scenario) and waste 3 weeks of my 12 weeks off before LO even gets here.

  • Perhaps you have the option of working from home close to your due date? I'm going to be working from home the first 2 weeks of April for definite and plan to work right up until I go into labor. I work for a small company that is very flexible though. Definitely check with your HR department to see what options you may have. It doesn't hurt to ask. i was surprised with the flexibility I'll have before and after my leave. Then you can always have your doctor approve a medical leave sooner, if necessary.

    ~~Everyone Always Welcome~~

  • I haven't heard of being pulled from work just because you hit a certain gestation. I am a nurse that works full time night shift and has spent the majority of the last 11 months having to work overtime due to a nurse shortage and a crazy large patient increase. I will be 36 weeks on Tuesday and I'm still working the OT and plan on working right up to delivery. My OB works for the same hospital (I'm in the NICU) and knows the conditions we have been working in and hasn't said anything to me about leaving work early.

I say as long as you are still healthy and not having any complications with your pregnancy you can work as long as you feel the need to or want to. The only thing I can think of as for the reason for having you take off is maybe to rest before baby gets here?

  • I am a teacher and I plan on working as long as I can. I am due June 19 and our last day of school is June 6. I am hoping I have her early so u will have more time w her before going back to school.

If the Dr tells me to go out early. I think it would be for medical reasons only. U so work an hour away so not sure if that will make a difference.

One of the MWs in my practice told me she does not want me to plan to work the last week or maybe a little more before the due date.  I haven't brought the FMLA paperwork over there yet and am not sure if all the MWs have the same thought (an earlier one asked how long I planned to work and I said I'd see how it goes closer to the time and she said that was a good answer) so I'm not sure what they'll put for a date.

The reasons this MW gave for stopping early I think were partly influenced by that my work is a little over an hour from home and is an hour from the hospital where we want to deliver.  Also, though, she suggested that labor tends to be more difficult if you're already tired from a whole day of work when it starts.  I think the implication is that she feels it reduces the chances of being able to manage it med-free; not sure if she meant even more than that ( like increased chances of needing emergency c-section?).  Will need to ask other MWs at later appointments.

DH definitely likes the idea of me stopping early.  I'm iffier about it but it's hard to say because I just don't know how I'll feel by then!  My MIL will be with us by that time and I'm sure things will not be as ready for baby at home as they should be so boredom should be a bit less of an issue.  I need to count up sick days, though (and see how many snow days we end up having ... every snow day now is an extra day I'll have to take as leave) to see if working a bit closer to due date would leave me with a few days to carry over into next year.  Since I teach, my leave will be running into the summer vacation so I'm lucky that the day I go out won't affect the time I have at home with LO.  I have to use all accrued sick days before other leave stuff, though, and not having any extra going into next year  and beyond makes me nervous so if I could manage to have a few days left it would be really nice.

edit was because of accidentally hitting post (while not done) when trying to just scroll down.  duh.
