Switching from bottle to sippy cup!

My dd is 14months old. She has been taking 2 bottles a day (morning and night) since 12months. She has a sippy cup during the day with water. She uses both cups...straw and regular. So 2 days ago I gave her the morning milk in her cup. She is doing good without the bottle. Not missing it but she won't drink the milk from the cup. I have to refill her water a few times a day but she won't even drink half her cup of milk.
SO two questions...

How many bottles does your 14 month old have a day? (Am I early or behind in doing the switch)

How do I get her to drink milk from the cup? Just wait it out. I'm sure eventually she will get used to it.
THANKS!!!

  • Just stop giving it to her, she will figure it out.  DS stopped on his first birthday never had an issue.

  • Oh!! So you stopped all bottles at 1?
  • Neither of my kids took a bottle so I didn't have to transition them from it but it still took a bit getting them used to drinking milk out of a cup.  I would just keep offering milk in a straw cup (find one that is easy to drink from).  Eventually she will start to drink more.  It took DS almost a month to actually drink like 5 or 6 oz.  He only gets milk at meal times though.

If she doesn't seem too attached to the bottle then I would just cut it out altogether right now.  If she fights it then you can take your time a bit with the nighttime bottle.  I think most people wean form the bottle between 12- 15 moths.  Good luck!
  • We went cold turkey with all bottles. At 12 months we replaced them all with straw cups. Took him a few days, but he drinks perfectly fine. They'll adjust. The general guideline for WCM is 16-24 oz per day. However, for many of us that isn't an option. For us my son has MPI and doesn't tolerate milk. So we do 16-24 oz of almond milk and supplement with water. We also keep his diet well rounded, but high in good fats and protein.

  • Thanks everyone!! This is my second child. My first is 7 years old and I can't remember what I did then. lol
I'm surprised how easily she gave up the morning bottle. I know the bedtime bottle will be a little harder. I will certainly wait until she is drinking milk from the cup. I have been told by our pedi that whole milk is important until she is 2. So I was happy with her having 16oz a day. I will just have to keep trying. I know she likes milk and she likes her cups so it's only a matter of time. ;)
