Should I take her to the doctor?

Myself, DD1 and DD2 all have colds this week. I'm pretty sure it's just a cold anyway. Scratchy throat, stuffy/runny nose. Nobody has a fever and everyone is eating, sleeping, playing pretty normally. LO is maybe slightly more fussy and slightly less hungry, but she's also cutting 2 top teeth and I think that's a major contributing factor.

So here's what I am wondering....

I'm trying to decide if I should take LO (or DD1 or myself) to the doctor?

We would not normally go to the doctor for a cold, but I've never had a baby LO with a cold before, DD1 didn't get sick for the first time until she was 17 months. Do you normally take LO in for a cold?

Also, of note, tomorrow is our last day of medical insurance until March 1st, due to my job change. I'm worried that if I take her in for a cold, which she will most likely get over within a week or so on her own, that I'll expose her to the flu (tho she has  had her shot), or something worse, landing us back in the doctor when we don't have insurance anyway.

So, what do you ladies think, should I take her in?

TIA :)

Re: Should I take her to the doctor?

  • I never took my DD in she never went off eating, she ate less but she wouldn't of gotten dehydrated. She had a bit of a cough and low grade fever. I gave her Tylenol. I had a cold at the same time and my throat was sore so I thought maybe hers was too so that is another reason I have her Tylenol.

But watch her if she has a fever, is acting lethargic, won't eat or drink for more than a day, and is crying even after you have given Tylenol. Then I would go in.

Your right about going in and catching another germ that's usually what happens to me too. So unless its bad I don't go in.

  • Yeah I'd be worried about RSV at the doctors office. R had that and it sucked. Can you look into cobra or a state insurance just for the kiddos for the month just in case ?
  • DS2 has a cold for about a week and half that turned into an ear infection. He never had a fever and was still happy as a clam. Just make sure there are no eye boogies, that was what made me bring him to the doc because I knew it was a sign of ear infection
  • Thanks all. Yeah, I didn't even think of RSV- that's another one I'd really like to avoid. So sorry for your LO's that have already gone through it :(

We have had one ear infection so far this winter, and major eye drainage was what brought us in for that one.

I think I will give the office a call and just see what their thoughts are- though I imagine they'll want to err on the side of caution and have me bring her in. Ugh- this is a tough decision!

I'll find out what a sick visit costs too- it might not be that bad. We did look into Cobra, and we have 60 days to apply and it becomes retroactive to the first date we didn't have insurance. It's $1,000 bucks for 1 month, unfortunately.

  • I've taken my LO in when he's had a cold and there wasn't much the doctor could do. My LO wasn't eating as much and her advice was to feed him frequently for shorter periods of time, keep elevated at night and a humidifier in his room. However two the times I've brought him in, he ended up with an ear infection but he had a fever both times.

I would call the doctor and see if they recommend coming in. My pedi always recommends it and its a good thing because E went in for a cold and came out with his ear infection diagnosis. The drainage from the cold can build up and cause ear issues so I would want my LO looked at to make sure its just a cold and nothing more.
This was us too. She has a pretty nasty cold and they recommended bring her in and I am glad we did. She had an ear infection in her right ear from cold and then again in her left.

    I would call and ask.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone, I did call, and they did want us to bring both girls in. Both have "upper respiratory infections" which is basically a cold and everything else looked good, thankfully. I'm glad we went in, just in case.
