please recommend good first shoes

DD is starting to walk so it's time to buy her some functional and good first shoes that she could practice walking in. I'm interested to see what is recommended...

Re: please recommend good first shoes

  • I plan on using robeeze with the soft rubber soles.
  • Loading the player...
  • I went to stride rite and got her sized before we bought her first pair.

  • We only use socks at home. We go out, he has Robeez to help keep his feet warm and dry.
  • Stride rite all the way

  • Stride Rite.  Their shoes can be pricey (some are $50 a pair) but they're worth it.  Get LO sized of course.  They have different level soles for the stage LO is in too.  We're in the cruising/learning to walk ones.  Sign up for the rewards program too so you get coupons!!

At this age, is it better to do soft sole shoes (I.e robezee type) vs hard sole shoes? We need to get something too and I'm not sure which way to go.

Soft soled if necessary. Shoeless is best.
  • Totally going to highjack the thread here....

When does one switch to hard-soled?  I know no shoes is best, then soft-soled (like robeez) second best, but for how long?

My almost 11 month old is finger walking (one hand, holding one finger for a bit of balance) she also cruises so spends a good couple hours on her feet each day.

We have her in robeez for grip and warmth since it's -25celcius and we have all wood floors.

But, when is best to switch over?  In the spring do we just have her in robeez outside?  She'd be 16+ months old...we'll be spending lots of time out in the back yard so she can be barefoot for the most part once it's warm enough.  We'll buy shoes for when we are out in public but I'm fine leaving her without at home and outside if it's best for her.  I do home daycare so she is home with me all day.

We have no shoes in the house rule, so we all have slippers for inside when it's cold. I'm in Michigan and it's currently about 0*F. We stayed with robeeze until she needed something more sufficient. We have stride rite and Pediped. She has big feet, her 5s are getting snug, so some of her shoes are harder soled than I'd like and she gets tripped up in them if she tries to run in them. She's been walking for 4 months so she's plenty capable of running other wise. Try to stay with the thinner soles as long as you can.

  • Stride rite! they measure and tell you which shoes are appropriate for your child. They are not cheap but it is important to have good shoes for their little feet so it it worth it!

  • You switch to harder soles (flexible sole) when they're walking around outside where they need protection.  Stride Rite is great and I agree with getting them measured.

  • We got DS a pair of high top converses and they work great for him. He's still in the process of learning how to walk so he gets a lot of good ankle support with the high tops.
  • My dd has the Robeez now. Does anyone have other recommendations besides stride right? Their shoes are to big for us. Size 1.5/2?

Really, unless your child is walking outside and needs actual protection, the Robeez are fine.

PediPeds are another option, we have two pair that will be probably ready for in 1-2 months when she's walking everywhere on her own. Right now LO wears socks at home and daycare, and Pedoodles when we go out. I like the Pedoodles bc it's a very thin leather sole with tiny ridges to be non-slip. thinnest out of all the shoes I've evaluated, and I'm very picky :)

Target also has a little brown Mary Jane shoe that has a thin flexible sole with pink flower treads, I have a pair of those too. They are just a little bit firmer than the Pedoodles so we aren't using them yet. They are only $12 so not a big commitment to try out.

I had this problem with DS. He needed hard soled shoes as recommended by his physiotherapist since his right ankle was rolling in.  I couldn't fin anything small enough.  I ended up finding shoes at Payless.  They had hard soled sneakers in size 2 that worked (and even had size 1s).  I just got his second pair of shoes this week, size 3 Nike Shox (from the used store).  But I might suggest looking at Nike as they seemed to have lots in the smaller sizes.  Once he makes it to a 4 or 5 we'll try out stride rites.

  • Stride rite because they measure and carry wide and extra wide sizes, pediped does not. That is my opinion but because my son has wide feet. Stride rite has a rewards program, coupons and lots of sole options. Plus, the inside part of the shoe will show you when your LO needs a bigger pair. I had a very good experience at stride rite.
