Short cervix ?

I went in today for my physical/pap and will be 15 weeks on Saturday.  The midwife told me that my cervix was deviated to the left and was slightly thin.  She did say that it was closed though and high.  But I have a history of miscarriage, so anything tends to make me nervous.  She said I just needed to make sure and bring it up to my dr at my next appt in 4 weeks so they could check a cervical length at my 20 week ultrasound.

Has anyone else had a similar situation?  I am just nervous that we should be checking my cervical length now and taking the appropriate measures if there is a problem.

I did call and leave a message for the dr to get his opinion, so I don't have to wait 4 more weeks.  But he is out of the office and won't return my call til tomorrow.

Re: Short cervix ?

  • My doctor always checked cervical length with my first pregnancy, but never mentioned if there was an issue with my cervix. I thought it was routine (and it very well may be).

If you have a call into your doc, I would try to wait patiently and see what he says. Surely if they were worried it might be a bigger problem, they would insist on you going in sooner than 4 weeks. And he very well may ask you to come in sooner, so he can evaluate it himself.

Try not to panic, it's probably fine. :)

  • I have a "friable" cervix thanks to my CKC surgery so they measure it at every ultrasound. Mine is a little short and they said if it gets too short I will have to get a cercilage (stitch) to prevent preterm labor. I would definitely let your OB know and have them measure yours because it can continue to shorten during pregnancy. I think (don't quote me) minimum length to be "safe" is 40 mm, mine started at 39 and at last check was 38, if that helps explain how it can shorten. Your doc may have been measuring it at ultrasounds without you knowing but I'd bring something up to be safe. Good luck!

  • We discovered my cervix was short at 23.5 weeks with DS#1 and 19 weeks with DS#2. Both times it was about 1cm and I had funneling. I was put on bed rest with both for the remainder of my pregnancy until 37 weeks. After it was discovered I went in every 2 weeks for it to be checked and had a FFN test done every two weeks. DS#1 was born 2 days before his due date and DS#2 was a scheduled c-section. Since I never got below 1cm and I never went into labor early they are not checking it every 2 weeks this time around until I feel its necessary. The Dr.s don't seem concerned about it, they think that I just may have a short cervix.
