Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How did you get your baby to sleep through the night?

How many if you have babies that are sleeping through the night already? And HOW did you get them to sleep through the night?! I always hear of people whose babies sleep 8+ hours at night as young as 6 weeks! What?!

My 11-week-old son still wakes up every 2-4 hours at night. Sometimes he'll go 5 or 6 hours, but that's rare. I am exhausted. Tell me your secrets!!!

Thanks in advance. :)

Re: How did you get your baby to sleep through the night?

  • With LO# 1 it was just a pattern. We put her down at the same time every night. If she woke up with changed her, fed her and put her back to bed. After awhile she just started sleeping through. It takes time babies wake up for a reason during the night don't get frustrated he'll sleep though when he's ready.
  • Our LO has been sleeping through the night for the most part since about 8 weeks. Our night routine is feed LO around 6p and keep LO up as long as possible without feeding again, give her a bath, swaddle and I feed her side lying in bed. She falls asleep nursing and I transfer her to her crib. She usually hits the crib around 9p, and sleeps until 5/6am.

I know everyone advises against getting the baby over tired, but this is what works for us. Sometimes she's down sooner, sometimes later.

That all being said, every baby is different :/ wishing you luck!

  • DD will be 11 weeks tomorrow and still doesn't STTN.  She goes down around 9:30 and wakes around 3:30 for diaper change and feed.  I don't even remember what sleeping in an 8 hr span is like anymore since I was up at least once a night peeing before her arrival!  But I will cherish the day she does STTN!

All that being said, I don't know if there are any secrets as much as every baby being completely different.
  • That's what I thought. I guess I'll have to tough it our for a while longer until he decides he's ready. :) thanks everyone!
  • Our little man is almost 10 weeks and still does not sleep through the night. He goes down for the "night" at 8:30 and is up every 2 hours like clock work throughout the night. He sleeps longer during the day than he does at night. Sometimes he gets up just to get up, refuses to take a bottle and doesn't need a diaper change so we have MOTN story time and rocking sessions. Each baby is different and your LO will get there eventually, and hopefully mine right along with you! Good luck!

  • Time. My LO is 12 weeks and sleeps some nights 4-5 hours at a time and some nights 8. It's not very consistent yet. At least we have him on a "routine" at night and can get him to sleep for the night regularly between 9-10pm, then he's usually up around 3 or 4am, then again 7 or 8 am. But one night, he went 10p-6a and the next 12p-8a...it was amazing. I can only get him to sleep right now in the swing though...but that's another conversation! :)

I am also baffled at how people achieve that as young as 6 weeks. I think it's luck! :) Honestly though, I think it just differs from baby to baby...they are all different!

Prep for FET #1: Aug 2015: found "mass" in uterus on saline sonogram; scheduled a hysteroscopy to remove.

Sept 2015: Hysteroscopy: mass turned out to be scar tissue(?), all removed. Recheck saline sonogram 2 weeks later showed "stuff" still in uterus (more scar tissue? remnants from surgery? Will see if clears with a period). Recheck saline sonogram 1 week later: all clear! Start Lupron and Estrace. Follow up u/s 2 weeks later: uterine lining only 5mm, add in patches. Follow up u/s 1 week later: uterine lining = 4.3mm (argh!), stop estrace and patches and start estradiol injections twice/week. Follow up u/s 2 weeks later: uterine lining = 5mm :/ Instructed to keep on estradiol injections and recheck in 5 days = lining still at 5mm. Need to make a decision - go for it? Or toss in the towel w/ this cycle and start all over again next year with a new protocol. Decided to go for it as we had 17 frosties; what have we got to lose??

  • My son has been sleeping through the night for the last few weeks and just wakes up to eat. He just took to it easily. We co-sleep with him most of the time, and that helps him sleep a lot because of the closeness. Since we are not up and moving about he just stays asleep. He will be 3 months old on the 3rd of Feb.

This is what we have done with our other two kids and are now doing with #3.  My other kids STTN around 4 months old.  It feels like forever, but you'll sleep again, I promise!  The first 1.5 years are the hardest.  They do regress in their sleeping pattern due to other things (teething, growth spurts, illness) but that's usually a few days or so.

  • You can't get a baby to do what their bodies are telling them not to do.  You just have to wait it out.  My almost 8 month old wakes 1-2 times a night and still eats a significant amount in that time.  He's tiny so we support feeding him as he needs it and will deal with the wake ups until he transitions from bottles, even if that's at a year old.
