CDBC *OP EDITED WITH NEXT WEEK'S GOAL*

edited January 2014 in Cloth Diapering
So how did we make out this week, ladies?  Are we ready to discuss the first 5 chapters yet?  Are people still hunting down the book?  Playing catch up?

FOR NEXT WEEK:  Let's read through Part 2 (Chapters 6-11) for next Thursday.  We can add a little more the following week, but will give people still hunting down the book/reading through the first Part a chance to catch up a little more.

  • The preface was fascinating, an has me totally psyched to get into the book. I've also been intrigued by everything that happened in Germany. Especially meeting Hitler and the stealing if the flag.
All of the comments referencing the horrors of hitler's reign are tragic and make me sad, but remind me how real this is.

  • I am to the part where they get to Germany for the Olympics so I will hopefullky be catching up here in a bit.

I had a rough child hood int he sense that I had problems where I would get blisters on the inside of my bladder that would burst and cause me to get a bladder infection. I would get antibiotics and the cycle would repeat itself. Because of that, I peed my pants all the time. Not a great way to keep friends...

Eventually my parents put me into swimming and later on even paid for diving. I really got to develop as an athlete and build self-confidence. Now I am in the military and furthering my career. It's amazing how one thing can change your whole life around.

  • I was really struck by the sibling dynamic and how it developed in these chapters. While the two brothers have a lot in common, the tendency for Pete to be seen as the good brother and Louie always the bad one could have really soured their relationship. So I was pretty impressed by how Pete went into the principal's office, vouched for Louie and then followed through getting him to train as a runner.

In the opening chapter it was striking how much the world has changed in terms of the kinds of things that the boys got up to. Partly it sounds like these were precocious children who lacked focus and were impossible to discipline; and that there was very much a "boys will be boys" attitude. But, I'm sure I'm reading this through the lenses of my own childhood experience. I was very sheltered and my parents kept me on a tight leash -- I didn't really have opportunities to misbehave.

As for things in childhood that prepare you for trials an adult -- I think in my case many little things add up to make the person that I am as an adult and how I handle things. I think there were things about my circumstances that in some ways forced me to grow up faster than my peers, even as I still had a lot to learn about the world. It's hard to pinpoint any one thing.
  • Pretty sure I'd shit myself if I found out my friend was a spy.....

Did Louis ever actually find out if he was a spy?  Or is just kinda to let us know after the fact?
It's not confirmed in the first section that we read this week. I've started the next section and it mentions that Sasaki has gone to work at the Japanese Embassy in D.C., and there's a bit about things going on there when Pearl Harbor was attacked. But I haven't read anything specific about spying yet. Other than the mention of the radio tower in Torrance, which we don't know much about yet.
  • He doesn't know yet, but I am wondering if he finds out later.

  • Books and movies on war are sometimes hard for me to follow, but I find it very interesting.  it always hits me when I remember how real all of it was.  I agree that it's very hard for us to imagine what it must have been like to live through such a war.

I'm a little behind too and not sure I will contribute much, but I'm going to lurk and see if I can keep up :)
